Hi is there anyone elses little one in the same boat as my daughter. She'll be going on a 1 night residential soon and it is starting to upset her. Her younger cousins dont need to wear dry pants anymore and so she is becoming more self conscious. Desmopressin hasnt worked due to the side effects. We will be going onto oxybutynin soon for frequency and urgency and praying this will help for night as it is usually prescribed for day time.
Speak to the school, she won't be the only one. 1 in 3 primary school aged children still wet the bed at night. What have you done so far to try and tackle the issue?
How much are they drinking during the day, this is key to strengthening the bladder to hold more liquids at night. Do they double void before going to bed, honestly this works. Has constipation been ruled out? Even if you think they are going regularly, it is almost always the guilty culprit until proven otherwise.
Yes she could increase fluid intake. She’s starting oxybutin to help with urgency and frequency. Will focus on double voiding too. No constipation and ultrasound clear 🙏🏽 thank you so much
Sorry you’re struggling and can imagine you’re super nervous about the night away.
For my 8 year old we did a combination of tolterodine for day time (though has recently moved to solifenacin which seems to work better for her), plus desomelt and the alarm and all that together did work within a few weeks. Also ensured she was drinking enough water and double voiding. Hopefully the oxybutinin + desomelt will help your daughter enough that the alarm can then do its thing.
Other think we do when she has slept over at friends house is give her some period pants (Modi Bodi do ones for age 8-10 and they fit my daughter who is very slim - haven’t found others that will fit her), to catch a bit of leakage…they look just like normal pants to anyone else but give more confidence…is that something you could consider? Wouldn’t hold a whole wee though…
Agree that you should speak to teachers and work out a plan to help her and keep discrete.
Hi, I really empathise with you. My 16yo son is still wet 4/7 nights. He’s been on all the medications and come off them all as no significant improvement. He now uses the mattress alarm but can sleep through it. He’s going for an internal in 2 weeks. I feel like I haven’t done enough to help. The washing can really get me down too. Hugs
We are in a similar position, however I think desmopressin has actually worked for night time wees. He may be having a reaction to it though we came off it before and the rash he had improved. And he may be getting it back now he is on it again Things that also help us are no fluids 2 hours before bed, and he has 3 wees before bed. He is quite stubborn and getting him to do a lot of the drinking/weeing he is supposed to do is hard. We havent tried the alarm because he is such a deep sleeper....My son is 10 and also has giggle wees in the day and occasionally passes stool so its been a challenge. We are concerned about when he goes to secondary school in 2026 so hoping to try and do more to help him before then. Oh we tried oxybutynin and that did not seem to help (he didnt reall yhave all the symptoms of urgency etc) but I know there are other options of this type of medication as others have mentioned. Best of luck with it xx
