Hi, I'm not sure if anyone can help. My daughter's been reffered to see a peadatrician for her withholding. She's 41/2 and this has been going on since she was around 2. It's got worse over the years at its worst now. Shes been on movicol for years. I got the refferal letter through for an appointment for the beginning of next month. I was just curious what to expect from this and if anyone else has been through simlar or seen the gastro team. The doctors told me the referral is for the gastrointestinal team but the letter days peadactric , I have no idea what to expect. I shouldn't worry but I'm worried thel palm me off and encourage what I'm doing now. It's effecting her eating and she's so anxious now ( won't stay at her dad's because constantly worried of getting tummy ache ) a long shot but just curious what others got from there appointments. I'm trying to be positive as these guys no best than anyone and I no where extremely lucky to have the appointment. Thank you

Hi ruthyxox

My little boy withheld from around 20months right through to 4.5 years old and was on movicol that whole time, he would go days without eating because he was completely full to the brim and so had to do regular disimations until we found the right maintenance dose. When we got our referral it was to the local continence team rather than paediatrics but I guess they will try the same routes to try to change your lo's witholding behaviour. It is a long road but you will get there, I think the most important thing for them is to get to a stage where they can trust that their bowel movements won't hurt which means getting the movicol maintenance dosage right, it's trial and error really. That is a huge part of breaking the habit of withholding, our journey was stressful, emotional, frustrating and sad all at the same time. I feel your pain and want to reassure you that it will get better, I promise. We are now 6 months clear of only using nappies for no. 2's, daily movicol and habitual withholding behaviour ❤️

What a lovely message thank you, really means alot. I'm just not sure what to expect and how they would help. In an ideal world id love for someone to look at her bowel and see how big this impaction is too see what were working with. Exactly the same as my daughter she's 41/2 now. She's been on Movicol for years. It got manageable for a good year on a maintenance dose. Where as now she seems to genuinly struggle. Even to pass slush type poo! I think she knows it doesn't hurt but she hates to go. It has such a big impact on every. Exactly what you'd said. She's currently on 3 sachets a day , I've upped it too 4 today and she's done a couple of nappies , it's just so hard. Ive tried the whole sitting on toilet legs raised. Praise and rewards. It just doesn't emough at the moment. Thanks so much for replying, so happy for you and it gives me hope x

I can't answer about what to expect but the letters from the hospital usually just say paediatrician, however each paediatrician usually has their own speciality. There isn't enough space on the standard letter template to put the speciality as well as paediatrician.
