Hi all I’m new to this but hoping for some advice, I have an 8year old boy who I believe is very bunged up he has always had trouble opening his bowels since a baby we have been through many laxatives, and have done the program of more sachets each day which didn’t help at all, my son soils his pants all the time, he’s known to smear his poo and hide it when he’s leaked. He gets it all in his finger nails and can have a very strong smell off poo that he can’t smell, he has no idea when he needs to poo we have done the 30 mins after food go sit on the toilet and try, we have put a fold up table in the bathroom with colouring books etc to try encourage him to just sit on the table. He complains about tummy aches every so often and can be in severe pain with it, he also goes through stages of aggression and frustration. Any advice on what we can do would be gratefully appreciated from a desperate mummy and daddy

Hi Mummyhayley,

Have you watched the Video by the "Poo Nurses". It is a pinned post on this site and is well worth you watching, in fact once you have watched it I think you should consider letting your son watch it. He needs to understand what is happening in his own body and also to understand that there are things he can do to improve his situation. You don't say whether you have a supportive GP but is certainly sounds like he is impacted and experiencing overflow and may require referral to a specialist to get meds reviewed. In the meantime push water, make sure he is having a good quality, high fibre diet, and keep doing the sitting routine, morning and night, for 10 mins each sitting - no devices or distractions! There is no quick cure, but consistency and routine do help.

Wishing you both the very best!

Deffo referral to specialist if GP hasn’t already done that. You need a good GP as well. We tried movicol, Senna, glycerin suppositories, bisocodyl suppositories, picasulphate, hospital enemas, klean prep, nothing worked. My son is now using Qufora balloon irrigation system after 2 years of horrendous symptoms and multiple hospital admissions. Finally under an amazing paediatric surgeon but it was a massive fight to get to where we are now (went through 3 hospitals) why don’t you post where you live and see if anyone on here can recommend a good specialist near where you live?
