Disimpaction day 7-advice please!

Hi. Looking for some advice / moral support please! We are on day 7 of disimpaction with our 4.5 year old son. Up to 8 sachets of movicol today (8 sachets yesterday too) and still stuck at type 6 poos. On day 5 we came very close to "brown water" but then on day 6 were back to type 4 and now on day 7 it's type 6 again! Finding it all so exhausting; it's a real battle getting him to drink the stuff and he's desperate to be back at nursery so hoping it's not far off! I'm just unsure if this going back and forth from type 4 to type 6 is to be expected and how much longer we might need to carry on? Thanks!x

My (limited) understanding is that it will go back and forth for a bit as various blockages clear. We were originally told to wait until we had consistent "gravy" for a few days before reducing... However, in the end, we were then told reduce before this actually happened, but are still having issues so I think we did it too early.... Good luck!

I remember disimapction taking over a week as we did it over the two week Easter hols! And yes back and forth sounds familiar too. Think we went up to 10 sachets per day but my son was twice your child’s age so find out your max dose allowance. My sons urology consultant spoke about mini suppositories that can be used when doing disimapction Ask the pharmacist about the size as they sometimes have to order them in. But we found this worked really well. Within 5 mins in fact. So it’s good for getting the harder/stubborn blockages out. Lay them in bed on their side knees up and give them an electronic device as a distraction !!

Sorry for those eating their breakfast now!!

Hope that helps

Pretty sure ones we got were called bisacodyl , child size! Ask the pharmacist. We used baby oil to help it go in but I guess you could dip in water too? The idea of these is that they don’t affect the digestive system but help get things moving that are stuck the other end!!

Re: getting kids to drink Movicol. It’s hard work, we have in an opted for mixing it with low sugar squash

Thanks. I said I'd update the continence team on Monday so maybe if things aren't moving more quickly by then I'll ask what they think about that. Did you find the disimpaction helped?

Keep going I mixed with squash but the chocolate one mixed with milk seemed to be easier to drink for my daughter. May need to give sodium picosulfate or Senna as well to get things moving.

Thanks! Added in Senna two night ago so hopefully that will help!

I’ve done a few disimpaction s and I find that after a few days, sometimes near the end of the regime my daughter will have a massive liquid poo as though the blockage has moved then things seem clear. We were also advised to give bright red juice eg beetroot or pomegranate and if they poo red water they’re clear!!!
