My son is 11 and goes to high school in August. He has been on movicol for a few years now and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better, he still has accidents everyday and I’m worried about him as he gets bullied on a regular basis at primary school from his peers because of it.

Hi, I’m new to this site,

My boys 10 in May, and I’m also worried about he going to high school next year, I want to try get this soiling himself sorted! We’ve been on and off movicol for years, and other types of laxatives

We’ve just finished a dose of feceal impaction so I’m cutting him down 6 sachets today to see how we go

We’ve got an app with the continence nurse 20th April

Hi he’s been 1-2 times to the incontenance nurse, she on long term sick leave and no one has took over. It’s so frustrating when you can’t help them with it

Hi Nicky,

I am mum to a twelve year old and last year, after a number of years of constipation, laxatives, incontinence and UTI's, my daughter started experiencing daily soiling. After watching the video posted on this site from the "Poo Nurses" I realised that even though she was on a daily laxative and having a daily bowel motion of sorts, she was slowly becoming more and more impacted. In October last year we did our first ever disimpaction using large doses of Movicol. The results were very good and the specialist put her on a new routine to try and retrain her bowels. You will read about this routine in many people's posts. Basically twenty minutes after breakfast and the evening meal, she has to go and sit on the toilet for ten minutes. He suggested for her age to do this without book or device as it was important that she was listens to her bodies signals. This is the most likely time that eating prompts the body to evacuate the bowels. I was stunned how often this works, usually in the morning. The other thing he suggested was using a vibrating watch set 6 times daily as toilet times. Even though she does not register a full bladder, she empties it at regular times so minimises pressure on her bladder. This too works very well (when she remembers to put it on!)

I really didn't think this would help, or at least not for a 12 year old, but it has made life bearable again.

At 12 she now knows that there are things she can do to help herself. Routine is the key, and for her 1 adult sachet of Movicol seems to enough as a maintenance dose.

I hope this helps. Best of luck to you and your boy.

Hi, Have you considered trying enemas?

My son is 5 and a half and was soiling since he was 4. We tried Movicol and Sennokot with mild results. Now he is still on medication, but if that doesn't work by the end of breakfast, after sitting on the potty for about 15 min, then we make sure the poo comes out with an enema.

Poo got to come out every morning then the rectum would be empty for the rest of the day and he would not soil.

Enemas gave us very quick results, and even though I bribed by son to let me do the first few, now he stopped soiling and he never argues or ask for a reward but understands we need (sometimes) to do an enema.

Hi my son is 14 November and has suffered since around 7 years old with withholding his poo, no idea how it started and having a older daughter suffer and grow out of it I assumed the same .

we tried lots of things over time and constantly got pushed back to movicol , I hate it but last October I finally got referred to the hospital paediatric ( previously cause of age he only got to see a poo nurse ! ) and yep got put back to movivol , we did the initial clear out in the half term going up to 12 sachets a day.

Then I dropped it to just 2 , I know now this wont work although it helped he slowly built back up again constantly soil at night times and day time leakage also , I went to the school and have to say they have been great allowing him to go into the medical area to learn so he does not miss out on work but can have excess to the loo quickly ,

fast forward to now and its still not perfect he now takes 5 sachets a day , pre this school holiday just he was on 4 , few days ago he had a huge clear out again, past 2 nights have been clean.

So I think what happens is the low dose makes him go but it still backs up and he needs a higher dose constantly to keep him clear , he also takes a senna every night.

Mornings he takes a muiltivitamin and a glass of orange juice before anything else.

Talk to the school and keep going its not easy and getting that right balance is really I think trial and error but it will happen, I can see this now and reading other people situations on here has definitely helped us understand it more.

Good luck
