The difference between zoladex and prostap?

Hi guys, I'm due next week to start 6 months of injections to induce menopause for my endo. I'm a bit confused as my consultant hasn't specified what the treatment will be and as far as I can gather there is 2 - zoladex and prostap. Can anyone tell me the difference and also which is better? Thanks =)

Both Prostap and Zoladex are part of a group of drugs called LH/RH analogues which work by manipulating your hormones. The only real difference (apart from the price) is I think relates to the 'needle' and side effects. As with all medications, what's right for one person, isn't right for someone else. Your Consultant will have left the decision to your GP as it will be dependant upon what your local PCT suggests but I you can discuss it further with your GP. Hope this helps!

As Beks has said, they're essentially the same drug in so much as they do the same thing, but for me anyway the similarity ends there.

When I first started having them about 15 years ago, I couldn't tolerate Zoladex at all, and had to have Prostap. I've just finished my latest six month course and guess what - can't tolerate Prostap anymore, I had to switch midway through from Prostap to Zoldaex.

Another thing to be aware of is that this probably isn't going to be a walk in the park. That being said, when I first started, I actually felt tons better on the Prostap, in every way; it wasn't just the pain relief. These last six months have in total contrast been absolutely horrible - but the Zoladex absolutely did its job, the three cysts that could otherwise have grown and burst have completely disappeared.

Endometriosis is nothing if not a roller coaster ride! Good luck x

I've been suffering for a long time with severe endometriosis so much so that all my pelvic organs are mangled together. I was given both the above injections during a six month period. The difference is the availability and price of the drug but the effectiveness is the same. Prostap is cheaper and can be stored in your local surgery or clinic. Zoladex has to be ordered when required. Prostap is also a kinder needle to the stomach and causes less bruising and bleeding around the injection sight. Protap worked for me, but my symptoms came back with a vengence after I stopped having them. My condition is quite bad though so I hope things work out for you.
