bowel issues post surgery

hi everyone, I had excision surgery 10 days ago - they removed a lot of adhesions around my bowel, pelvic wall, pararectal space and had to release my ovaries that were stuck to the walls of my pelvis too. I have a lot of scarring in the pouch of Douglas too.

I now have terrible Diarrhea all morning, every morning. Bowel issues were one of my main symptoms before surgery so it’s hard not to be disheartened by this. The current situation is worse than before.

Has anyone else had this post surgery? Does it get better as your bowel etc heals?

thank you

If you had bowel prep then there is a good chance this is the cause. I was warned this may happen to me initially. It does get better. Mine was within a few days but I ate nothing but bananas and dry toast until it did. If really bad, you can get your doctor to prescribe you something to stop it but I found the best treatment was diet & just sit on the loo every couple of hours to avoid accidents. I also found this the worst part of recovery post op, but please don't be disheartened as I feel there is a very good chance it will get better

You are very welcome. I had no idea it would be do uncontrollable whilst I waited for my bowel to "wake up" so really got me down so I know how awful it can make you feel. Just know there are things that can be done to help so don't suffer in silence

I had issues for the first 2 weeks with my bowels post op as I also had diarrhoea and cramping. I got told it’s likely to do with medications as I was still taking pain killers and also antibiotics they given me to take for 10 days after op. Things settled down on there own especially when I finished the antibiotics x

Thanks for the reply! I’m not on antibiotics but hopefully it will just calm as time goes on. Thanks so much for replying, it’s made me feel better to know it’s not just me x

Hi,

I had my op in March this year. I was told I had adhesions on my bowel. I'm now lately experiencing an increase in problems with my bowels and am being referred to gastro as my inflammatory markers are high. I was taking imodium to help manage the diarrhoea and found this helpful. Currently taking buscopan which is now helping the cramps. Just thought I'd share this in case helpful! x

Thanks for your reply! Luckily I’m already under a gastro consultant due to me prior bowel issues. Thanks for the tips. Hope your referral goes through quick. X
