Surgery
I was in for 2 nights in total after hysterectomy, salpingoopherectomy, bowel shave and pelvic clearance.
Hello
These days they are reluctant to do hysterectomy surgery. I suffered for 20 years with Endo. I’ve had multiple miscarriages and a ruptured ectopic, sadly I could never have children. I also had many surgeries many treatments. I used to faint every month from sheer blood loss, I was constantly anaemic. Last year after two years of zoladex and prostap with add back hrt, and after bleeding for 7 months non stop I had my hysterectomy in October. Sadly it became a medical emergency and my bowel was stuck to my womb, it was a 50/50 I’d pull through. Thankfully due to a great emergency bowel surgeon who performed colostomy surgery I made it. I was in hospital 11 days, 4 of those on morphine drip then twice daily long acting morphine along with paracetamol and tip up liquid morphine. I had two stomach drains and a catheter. I know this is the extreme end but it can happen. Usually your in a couple of days. No housework, cooking, shopping or lifting a kettle for six weeks afterwards. It took me 3 months to get back to semi normal. Still a long way to go and more surgery this summer and then up to a year recovery this time. We are tough we can do this everyone on here is behind you good luck
if your endo is located outside the womb (which mostly it is) then a hysterectomy won’t treat your pain. Have you had excision surgery for endometriosis? Tying tubes is just a contraceptive procedure it doesn’t change the fact you still have menstrual cycles or do anything to endo, it just means the egg shouldn’t be able to get to where it needs to go be fertilised and implant.
My hysterectomy was supposed to be day surgery. I was assessed as a good candidate for this due to level of fitness. When they went in they found stage 4 endometriosis and abandoned it. It was totally unexpected and they did not have the skill set to tackle it ( my bowel is attached to my cervix and left ovary). If you know you have endo then please request an MRI prior to the operation as you may need a team of specialists in the room. If it's a bigger operation then you could stay in several days. Also try to keep your ovaries if you can as surgical menopause can be brutal. Read around it first. There's a good book called Surgical Menopause I'd recommend. I'm on zoladex now which is working (finally) for me and I've stopped bleeding after 20 months of chronic anaemia. I'm 51 and they seem much happier to do a hysterectomy on older rather than younger women. They used to do them a lot (my mother's generation) but they've realised that it's a much bigger operation in terms of impact on organs and can lead to a prolapse down the line. Also with the "mesh" scandal of recent years they seem much more cautious about it. Good luck x
Have you had an MRI already? I bled for 3 months on zoladex but it's finally stopping.
No I didn’t need a colostomy bag thankfully. I had a endo nodule on my bowel, kissing ovaries which had stuck my uterus and ovaries to bowel as well.
Where you’re ovaries have been pulled behind your uterus and are touching so look like they are kissing
