hello everyone

Last week I took a visit to my GP after having heavy periods, stomach pains, dizziness, full body pain, headaches and nausea for the last 10 years. Other doctors have suspected arthritis but after being on pain meds and treatment for several years and still no difference I decided to go back to the doctors and see what could be done. I saw someone different to my usual doctor who has now suggested I may have endometriosis I’m scheduled for more blood tests this week and have been prescribed progesterone tablets to take at night. I’m only 22 so the whole situation is very daunting to me. I was just wanting to see if anyone had any advice or experience with being on progesterone so I can know what to expect

I think that is good news that you have found a doctor who is interested in finding what might be causing your symptoms.

Probably it will be worth you reading up online to see how your symptoms fit with common symptoms of endometriosis. Please don’t be too daunted by what you might hear about endo. You may not have it of course, and if you do, you are at least getting the chance to try some initial treatment, and be investigated. There is interesting research going on into better methods of treatment too, that you are young enough to benefit from!

I take it it may be the progesterone only pill you have been prescribed? Some people find some mood changes, but many take it without problems. Give it a few months, or whatever your doctor suggests, but go back to them if it is not helping your pain/ heavy periods etc. or of course if you think you are experiencing side effects.

You GP might refer you for an ultrasound scan as well, endo does not always show up though unless the radiologist has special training in identifying it. You are likely to be referred to gynaecology, and this should be to someone with a special interest in endo.

I hope you find some relief from your symptoms. If you are still experiencing painful periods, talk to the GP about pain meds.
