Has anybody got any Info on haveing a hysterectomy please do you need to stay in hospital how long recovery thanks

I had a hysterectomy on 21st Nov so coming up to 6 wks post op.

I had keyhole and vaginal surgery I stayed in hospital for 2 nights, I was told hysterectomy’s are not day surgery. I was only in 2 nights cause could not get my pain under control.

I also think it depends on what surgery you have and how you are from the anaesthetic.

The first 2 weeks were the hardest but now on the outside I appear good but I know am still healing on the inside. I ve not done any heavy lifting or using the hoover etc as advised I have started driving. I do notice if sat in an up right position for too long I get a lot of pressure on my abdo especially where my scars are.

I have also found and not many people advised me on this, I have kept my ovaries and my hormones over the last 6 weeks have been so up and down. I ve been crying, angry, depressed everything not sure if it’s my natural hormones or because I ve not really been out much in the last 5 wks but it feels shit.

I go back to work 9th Jan, well I been back at work since 19th December but from home that’s been another added stress as would not get sick pay so that’s not helped.

Anyway when you have ur op ur recovery time will be based on how ur body heals and how you are.

I had total abdominal hysterectomy with ovary, fallopian tubes and cervix removal and was only in for 2 nights. TBH I was glad to get home as wasn't getting any sleep in hospital. I'm now just over the 6 month mark and still have tenderness and bloating but I'm in a better place than before the op. I'm on hrt patches which are helping with the menopause symptoms x

I had a total hysterectomy with both ovaries and a lot of endometriosis removed . The doctor came and saw me the following morning and was concerned about whether I was weeing ok as she had to operate on both kidneys and my bladder but once she was happy I was discharged at lunchtime. Mine was keyhole and vaginal which obviously helps a lot. I had 6 tiny scars which healed really quickly but I felt like I had been hit by a bus for weeks.

I went back to work after six weeks and I probably wasn’t physically ready but mentally I was bored silly so I took it easy . The hardest part for me was going straight into the menopause but the HRT helped a lot.

I think it’s a very different experience for everyone but just take it easy, look after yourself and build up your daily activity slowly. Lots of rest and healthy eating x

Your length of stay is dependant upon the type of operation you have. I had 7 days because I had an abdominal op. It took about 4 weeks to really heal. One thing, I will say, is that it was the most liberating thing I ever did. It made my life so much better. Please don't be afraid to ask the medics, they should put your mind at rest. Just take it easy and go with your own body.

hi, I had mine six months ago and was the best decision I ever made, I had a large fibroid and they also discovered adenomyosis, both causing very heavy bleeding and anaemia. My recover was fine, pain meds helped however after two days I didn’t need the strong stuff. No heavy lifting or house work for a good amount of time to let everything heal - it’s a big operation so please allow this time and don’t chance lifting etc. I kept my ovaries but I still get some hormonal fluctuations. It’s a big op but so worth it if it gives you relief and your life back. There will be days where u feel more tired and sore than others but that’s all part of the recovery process. I got loads of advice from the forum called ‘hystersisters’. Good luck xxx

Thank you all for sharing your stories in reply to XXemsXX 's question. It really highlights the complexity of the surgeries and the variables involved in regards to recovery times. I have had various surgeries over the years and the recovery times and greatly varied. You will be given timeframes from the hospital, but always trust your own body. Best of luck with your surgery x
