Issues after laparoscopy

Hi everyone,

I had my laparoscopy almost three weeks ago and I’m just wondering if my post surgery issues are normal. I’ve been having pain with bowel movements ever since the surgery and it doesn’t seem to be letting up. I thought it was due to my period as those pains always coencided with my menstrual cramps before the op but my period is finished now as of about a week and a half ago? I was bleeding for about twelve days. I’m also experiencing what feels like ovulation cramps (which I always got anyway) but throughout my cycle and not just when ovulating. I’ve also been feeling very mentally down and unwell in general. I’ve had issues with depression in the past but it hasn’t been this bad in a long time and it started after my lap. I’m wondering if anyone has struggled with their mental health after the op. Has anyone else experienced any of these things?

p.s - how long did your stitches take to dissolve? The glue came off of my incisions within the first week and they’re scabby now but the stitches look like they’ll be there for a long time yet.

Thanks!

hi coco :)

If you're experiencing increased pain then please contact your outpatient number on your surgery discharge info. Some pain is normal, it can take months to settle. But it also can be a worry, so if in doubt contact the gynae nurse or your outpatient number.

The depression could be just coming to terms with it all? Was it a diagnostic lap? I was very up and down too after mine.

My stitches took like 2 months to dissolve haha. Nurse said if they are catching on clothes you can trim them :)

I will say though that your body has just gone through a lot, so some pain is definitely normal. Your insides have to heal too, regardless of how small those incisions are. So please try not to worry too much! But defo get in touch with your team, they are the professionals and we can't offer any real medical advice xxx

Hi Coco,

I’m about 12 days post op from a laparoscopic cyst removal and feel you on the mental health side, my anxiety and depression has been abysmal after this (it’s really common especially bc they’ve messed around with your hormones etc) and post surgery depression is also common , really wish they’d tell us about that pre- surgery tho i often feel the cramping pain too and i’m also desperately waiting for my stitches to stop freaking me out! but you’re not alone and let’s just hope it gets better from here on out!
