Feeling really low 7 weeks after full hysterectomy

I had a full hysterectomy at the end of June.

I was initially feeling on top of the world after the surgery, the best I had felt in years.

for the last couple of weeks I’ve been feeling really low, irritable, angry, negative thoughts, initially I thought I was tired, now I’m thinking it’s hormones.

My consultant told me to stop the progesterone and take estrogen HRT only, I know my gp will tell me to take anti depressants which I do not want to do.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice/recommendations would be much appreciated.

Hey lovely,

I had my hysterectomy, oophorectomy mid June, think I'm about 9 weeks post surgery now. I was just googling last night natural things to help with my mood.

I have been really irritable the past few weeks, really snappy with people and Im not normally like that, with zero patience.

I was hoping that the HRT I am on just hadn't fully kicked in yet! As the night sweats etc have all gone. But my mood is definitely getting worse.

So I can't suggest anything to help, just want to say you aren't alone feeling like this.

Take care, DM if you want to chat about anything! Xx

Thanks for responding- mine definitely feels hormonal as I can’t control it.

Hopefully for both of us they can get our hrt dosage right and balance the hormones - I much prefer the feeling on top of the world that I had for the first couple of weeks after the op.

What hrt are you currently on? How old are you if you don’t mind me asking!! I had total hysterectomy this April everything removed ovaries uterus tubes and cervix. I totally understand and felt the same my hrt wasn’t right which is what caused those feelings. How are you sleeping? Big hugs it doesn’t take a while to balance the hormones mine are still up and down xx did you have the hysterectomy due to endo? If so you will need progesterone just maybe a different type xx

Thanks for responding. I’ve just turned 43.

I’m currently taking 1mg of Elleste Solo daily and a pump of Tostran 2% gel three times a week. I’ve stopped the progesterone (Utrogestan 100mg) on advice of my consultant.

I’m waiting for results of a blood test and a 24 hour saliva test to see if my estrogen dosage needs to be increased.

Someone I know who is mid forties and had a hysterectomy several years ago stopped taking hrt as they had the same symptoms I’m having - they feel great every day.

My consultant has asked me to keep going with the hrt but I hate this feeling of having a dark cloud hanging over me, it’s just awful.

As for sleep, it’s ok, I do have to get up several times to go to the bathroom which is disruptive. I was given tablets to help with that but have stopped taking them in case they are giving me added side effects.

I did have the op due to Endo and a small amount was found on my bladder during surgery.

Hope you find something that works for you x

It does sound like you need more oestrogen but I found when I just had high oestrogen I didn’t feel right so I’m not advising this but I went back to taking my Femodette contraceptive pill as that’s the only type of progesterone I could tolerate and that helped. I am on 3 sprays of Lenzetto as well which is oestrogen. I didn’t get on with the patches I was put on high doses 100 and 75 but both didn’t help me however I found the combination of the femodette and Lenzetto spray is the best for me. I did have pmdd before so it’s been scary balancing hormones but when it’s good it’s amazing I feel human again. I didn’t get on with the tablets at all but I have other bowel issues and did have endo removed from my bowel so it’s tricky.

Most just usually say up the oestrogen which isn’t always helpful as the different types effect us differently I’ve had to change a few times due to the supply issues but the patches and pills are not good for me. My main issue is what the hrt has done to my leg circulation I can barely stand without them turning purple with white blotches on them and they hurt so much. My gp is looking into it as it started when I was just having the sprays but the patches made it so much worse 😢. It’s a hard balance and does take time but I have osteoporosis and have suffered many fractures even all my ribs on both sides so I wouldn’t recommend stopping oestrogen as you need it for your bones at your age and trust me multiple fractures hurt a lot more than any endo I had or even the sugery recovery for hysterectomy.

Not sure if that helps iou but I do worry about when people suggest stopping hrt as osteoporosis is honestly horrific especially at a young age xx

Morning,My consultant called on Friday and I do have low estrogen so have been told to up my dose. So far my mood has improved a little but still feel exhausted and low. Hopefully as time goes on it will improve.

Interesting what you say about the different types of hrt and what works, the patches just made me feel sick all the time whereas the tablets seem to be ok.
