Hormone treatments- pro's and con's?

Hi,

I'm new here.

I've just been diagnosed after 11 years of trying to get a referral and to get a doctor to listen to me. I had my internal scan last year and they found cysts on my ovaries and said i could possibly have endo, (Which i suspected all along). I was meant to have consultations a few months after this but they all got cancelled and I felt I was forgotten about, without an actual diagnosis. Today I finally spoke to an endo nurse.

I'm reluctant to go on any hormone treatment as i worry about the side effects, and the fact that they don't actually get rid of the endo cells, they just help with pain managent.

I'm hoping I can just have the surgery and remove what they can...what are people's exeperiences of treatments? I feel like I've been flooded with information and feeling like i have a mountain in front of me to climb.

I've been looking at holistic approaches as this alines more with me as a person...any tips on these?

Hi. I have a prostap injection every month and also a Mirena coil with hormones in it. I’ve been in the prostap quite a while now. This is my second stint with it. Overall I’ve found it helps. No, it doesn’t get rid of everything, but makes things more bearable. I find that In The week leading to the next injection I generally have a flare so think that proves the hormones help as it’s onky when I’m due my next jab.

I've had 2 stints on decapeptyl injections and livial tablets and had every side effects i wished I'd never started them tbh. Noone will do a laparscopy for me. Based on my experience I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as my endometriosis is worse than ever since, stick to your instinct and good luck with your journey.

Hi, I was given the mirena coil and prostap injections. My experience of both is not really positive. Did the coil help with bleeding - yes. Did Prostap help the pain - yes. However I've had a number of unpleasant and possibly dangerous side effects from both. The mirena caused me to have IIH (Idiopathic Intracranial hypertension) which caused daily morning haedaches, a number of allergic reactions, hives and petchaie. And Prostap gave me high blood pressure and cholesterol plus made my migraines worse. Like you I wasn't keen on having any hormone treatment but felt it was in some ways forced on me as a "you have to try this before we will consider doing anything else". I wish I'd stood firm on what I believed. I had my hysterectomy 4 weeks ago and I already feel better for not having that stuff in my system. They shouldn't be pushing this on women who are not comfortable with it. I don't want to scare you but I wish someone had told me about this before I went down that route. It's your body to decide what treatment is best for you. Wishing you the best on this journey xx

Hey, I started Prostap last year and was meant to try 6 months of it but stopped around 4/5, I couldn't handled the affect it had on my mental health, even with the HRT. I've also put 2 stone on since starting it. My pain was gone in the first 2 injections but then it came back so didn't seem worth carrying on. I've now gone back to my consultant and requested surgery which they've agreed to. I only did Prostap because I was in the middle of getting a second opinion from a different hospital and they lost my notes - during this time my new consultant suggested trying it to ease pain in the meantime. I personally wouldn't do it again but at the time I felt I had to try it. I would say that if you want surgery then stick to your guns and request it.

I had a labroscopy last year to remove all of my cysts and endo cells in my body and within 6 months I was back in the same situation again and am now waiting for an MRI scan to see if it has wrapped around my bowel and organs now as well.

Hi Beautyintheordinary

First of all, a really warm welcome to the forum. I'm delighted that several of our members have reached out to you already to offer their support and share their experiences.

A laparoscopy is one of the best ways of diagnosing endometriosis and can also be used to treat endometriosis. You can find out more about the procedure and what it involves here: endometriosis-uk.org/your-l...

If you're looking for a more holistic approach to easing your endometriosis symptoms then the 'Endometriosis Treatment Pack' can be downloaded at endometriosis-uk.org/endome... - it starts off by running down the more traditional treatments including hormone relief, but then offers lots of other suggestions that take a gentler approach. Hopefully you find something that works for you.

All the best x

It can be tricky at first to find out what works best for you as we all respond to things differently. Personally I didn't get on with hormone treatments as I got every side effect going. I found a combination of diet changes to a more anti-inflammatory diet and some homeopathy really helped me. Good luck

Thank-you all so much for your comments and vital information!

Wishing you all the best xx
