Tramadol - Anxiety

Hi for my endo pain and pelvic pain I’ve been taking tramadol with paracetamol. I’ve been on this since getting the coil fitted but the pain has been more frequent.

This may be stupid but I take 50mg x 1 or 2 tablets 2/3/4 times a day depending on my pain. I definitely wake up in agony in the mornings and before bed.

I am scared I will become dependant to it and when I spoke to my doctor about it they were dismissive. I was on morphine in the hospital but as my pain is getting better this is the step down.

Any advice

Hi. How is your pain today? I had tramadol for 9 months, 2 tablets 4 times a day and it just about made me comfortable for 2/3 weeks a month, the rest of the time I often ended up in hospital. Tramadol can become addictive but for me the balance that it meant I could be a reasonable functioning mum for those few weeks made the risk worth it. When I had what turned out to be a big operation the hospital were great and said at my 6 week check they would arrange how to wean me off the tramadol in a safe way but I didn’t need it. Within 4 days of surgery my pain was so mild I didn’t need them and I didn’t have any side effects with not taking them but if I had the hospital definitely would have been there to help. Have you tried the endo diet to help with your pain? X

I’ve never heard of the endo diet where do I find this. And my pain is leaving me in bed but I really don’t like taking the full dose I’ve had 2 doses of 1 tablet today at 5 am and another at 4pm I only take it when the pain is killing me. But it leaves me in bed screaming my legs go all numb and sometimes I’m vomiting - I’m in uni so hospital at the moment is the last place I want to end up I’m about to finish my bachelors and I’m trying so hard to stay focused but the pain is killing me.

About the operation I was told I need to loose weight first before anything so will look into that diet - thank you hope you are well xx

Hi. It’s very hard, I struggled for years without a diagnosis- only got that at 33 when they operated as they thought my appendix had ruptured. For taking the meds, I was the same I took it as a last resort but actually the pain team said that by taking the prescribed dosage regardless of pain would stop the pain getting as bad and for the majority of the time ( I had problems with a cyst which was incredible painful) it did work. The endo diet really helped me, it’s to reduce foods that can aggravate the pain. Good luck with getting your degree, I’m good at the moment thank you, my surgery in 2017 was a success and having a baby in 2019 has kept it at bay. Xx

Hello, I can completely relate to your worries regarding tramadol. I have been taking it constantly for 3 years now and it's driving me mad. I hate taking it, but if I don't, I know my pain will rocket.. I've had 2 surgeries since starting them and both haven't stopped the pain. I had my first surgery 6 years ago and I recovered so much better after it. The pain almost dissappeared. My gynae thinks my pain is now from adeno so I will have to get a hysterectomy at some point. I'm starting my ivf treatment and the Dr is optimistic that the injections help alot with endometriosis and adenomyosis pain. I also changed my diet, I'm vegetarian anyway, but I also cut out as much dairy, wheat and soy as I can. I hope this helps, even just to know you aren't alone. X

Thank you I think a big diet change is what I need but it’s so hard to start but I think I’m gonna follow an anti-flammitory

Hi, I had my first lap and diagnosed with endo 8 years ago. It wasn't that severe then, but got worse over the years resulting in 6cm cyst on ovary, removed via lap in August 2020. At this one they discovered extensive endo and sent me for an MRI for suspected bowel endo. Third lap was April 2021 for excision and tube removal. Ive been taking either tramadol or codeine virtually every day, even now I have pain on waking up and usually take 2 tablets at 6am so I can get more sleep. I am a extremely responsible person and write down every tablet I take at what time, however I had to fight to keep getting them. The consultants letter after my op last year advised to take paracetamol, the gp saw this and when I went to collect there was a bag of paracetamol !Anyway, I don't feel addicted and can go without and as long as you are a responsible user carry on.

Good luck, stay cool x

Hello. I also used to take meds as a last resort and although I was referred to the pain management team twice and tried following it up, I was never seen by them. Fortunately I have a friend who was a Macmillan nurse and she explained to me that taking pain medication as a last resort would mean I would not get the benefit of them. It would render them pretty useless as that is not how they are intended to work. She told me I needed to take the meds either before the pain started or at least at the first sign of any pain to block the brain pain pathway. I've done that and it's been easier since. I don't have pain all the time, but I get pain frequently and severely and I can be throwing up and feeling like I'm passing out. I think Tramadol can be addictive, but there are ways to help you come off these things and better to be out of pain atm. I also use a Tens Machine (Ova tens) which has helped. It doesn't take all the pain away, but it also helps block pain messages, so I try to always put the tens machine on at the first sign of pain too. Keeping a food diary can definitely help. It takes time, but I learned for instance that I'm better off without meat a few days before my period, I try to keep added sugar in foods low and bizarrely, I discovered that I cannot consume more than 3 cups of jasmine green tea every month. My niece discovered the same thing. I hope you find some relief soon. xx
