Hormones & endometriosis

Hey guys,

I have recently been diagnosed with endometriosis and had a laparoscopy about 8 months ago. I had the copper coil for a while but my gyno suggested swapping it for the mirena coil which was supposed to help with my endometriosis so he did that during my laparoscopy.

I was originally on the copper coil because when I had the implant with hormones in a while back and my body rejected to it. I feel like the mirena coil is doing the same now. My mood swings have got worse which is my main concern as I seem to be getting more anxiety with it. Other side effects are - more spots and a lot of hair loss and unpredictable spotting.

I’m looking at other contraceptives and even thinking about going back on the copper coil but unsure if it will make my endo worse on the other hand. If anyone is going through the same issue or have any advice regarding this issue, please let me know. I’m not longer under the care of my gyno that did my lap so I’m feeling pretty alone and the thought about starting from scratch to be referred to a different gyno is frustrating.

I have a copper coil (same as you I don't like the hormones) and recently I got diagnosed with endo during a lap. I had the same concerns as to whether the coil has actually caused / brought on my issue but I was told that it shouldn't have. Have you heard different? I'm intrigued

I’m with you, hormonal contraceptive that are progesterone only are vile for side effects. I can’t see why the copper coil wouldn’t also help, as surely it keeps the womb lining smaller like the mirena? My friend has similar symptoms with mirena and had it removed. I daren’t try it due to a lot of peoples side effects.

Hello, I would personally recommend sticking with the mirena coil as you will pretty much stop bleeding. You may spot but you won’t have proper periods. Basically everytime you have a period the endo will get worse and that why they like using the mirena coil. Also it’s very small amount of hormones going straight to the ovaries. It took my body around 6months to settle but it really was the best ‘treatment’ I had. A laparoscopy remove the endo and then the mirena. Recently I had a copper coil fitted (long story) and I can feel a lot of endo symptoms coming back and because it creates inflammation in the womb it’s really bad for endo plus you still bleed so it’ll only get worse. Apologies that was a long one, in short give the mirena coil some time to settle 🙏🏼

I had a bad experience with a Cooper coil and have had a nasty pelvic infection caused by it. Four nights in hospital with an infection and intra venous antibiotics. I’ve recently been told this could of caused my problems. As it can irritate the womb lining. It also made my period pains. I choose this as I am not great on hormones . Weigh up the pros and cons.
