Hi, need some advice I'm having endo removed next week. The gynecologist has suggested I have the marina coil fitted while I have the procedure. I'm a bit concerned as I suffer with pms and I've heared some stories it's made peoples pms symptoms worse. Anyone else experiences would be appreciated thanks.

Hi. Good luck for next week hope all goes well. I had a laparoscopy on 24th September and was encouraged many times to have the mirena coil. I decided not to as had read mixed things about it. Although my periods are excruciatingly painful there not heavy and I was worried if I had the coil this could happen from things I had read. I did alot of reading and research about it beforehand. The mirena coil works really well for some people though. Just do your research and ask lots of questions. 😊

I have not had the coil although many doctors have recommended I try, so I cannot say in terms of PMS but I have had two laparoscopies so I can offer some insight if you need any. You will have vaginal bleeding after the lap, much like a period (mine was quite painful) so if having the coil fitted at the same time would cause more pain I would maybe give it a miss for now.

One thing though I would say to anyone having the lap is ask for laxatives and start taking them as soon as you take cocodamol/codeine! I became so constipated I was in the worst pain of my life, worse than the endo, for hours and had to go back to A&E. HYDRATE! Eat prunes! I drank so many laxatives and they just about made me go normally.

And take as much time as you need to heal, it took me much longer than the 1-2 weeks bollocks that they tell you.

I hope your surgery does the trick x

I'm on my 2nd mirena now and get on well with it as it has made my periods manageable (much much lighter and less painful, I have both endo and adeno). Both times the coil has been fitted during a lap. I've not noticed pms being worse than before for me. I do get rage sometimes but think I'm now perimenopausal so probably has more to do with that! I would say for me each coil has taken 6 months to settle and until then I get a lot of spotting. Good luck with your procedure.

Another thought, how do you get on with the progesterone only pill? I found side effects of that worse than coil mood wise.

I have quite a sensitive stomach to medication and it just gave me an upset stomach when I tried it. Glad to hear you get on well with it x

I tried different medications after lap because pain was still there. Nevertheless I ended up with Mirena anyway. It was my last option except Lipron shots that my doctor's advised against and I don't want to do them as well. Because I could not tolerate insertion at all, I went through another anesthesia to put it in. I think it is ok to try it and if it does not work take it out. I have some side effects and pain is not gone completely. It has been 2 years since insertion.
