Hello my GP has just prescribed me mefenamic acid for my endo pain

I just wanted to ask has anyone else on here tried it?? Do you find it helps? How long are you supposed to take it for?

And has anyone had any side effects with it at all?

Hi. I used to take Ponston Forte and it used to make me soo sick. I would have a very bad mouth taste and then it stopped working for me completely so I switched.

Hi lovely, I took both mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid together and found it made a difference for me. It didn’t last long term but definitely for a while. I then decided to go on the pill which also helped me a lot. I don’t remember getting side effects with either xx

Hey I went on mefenamic acid for the pain and it helped me massively. I used to take it three days before my period, during and then a couple days after. I wouldn’t say it’s a long term fix but on those days where I was in excruciating pain, I think it definitely eased the symptoms. I don’t think I had any side effects that I know of Xx

Hey,

I have the same response as razzledazzle. Helped me massively, i always had to have something to eat with it though otherwise I felt it did not work so well.

I also yook it a few days before period, during and only a day after.

Hope it helps you.

I was on mefenamic and then tranexamic and then both. It felt like it made a difference occasionally but my periods were still mostly hideous. No real side effects I can think of.

I've been taking mefenamic acid for 15+ years - it does help with the pain more than over the counter painkillers but I do need to take the pill as well. As others have said, I start taking it about 1-2 days before my period starts. The one side effect is it's quite tough on your stomach - if you have IBS or gastritis or get indigestion, it can make it worse. You definitely need to eat something when you take it. (Caveat - I'm still on the long road to an "official" diagnosis as I haven't had a lap yet but consultant is fairly sure I have endo)

I was prescribed it in March of this year. I have found it helps but I have to take it as soon as I notice a brown discharge even if if I don't have pain, as I know my period is days away. This month I didn't do that, left it too late and I didn't find it helped at all I was in agony! Even my Ovira machine wasn't helping! I've got through 100 capsules since March and need to get some more now. I take two of them with two paracetamol and haven't had any side effects that I notice.

I take Mefenamic acid every day along with other prescribed medication for my endometriosis. It helps and haven't had side effects from it

Hi Razina, I thought Mefenamic acid was just to slow down the blood flow..my doctor said to take it before my period started and then throughout it but not for the whole month. Were you prescribed it for everyday just out of interest?

Hey Vizzle. Mefenamic acid won’t help the bleeding flow, you need tranxemic acid for that. Mefenamic is for pain x

Okay thanks I can only go on what my GP prescribed me, no wonder it's not really helping then!

My friend was prescribed the same when she had continuous bleeding and no pain, she had to go back to them and explain what it’s for and what she needed instead. It’s mad. I find tranxemic acid is brilliant for slowing the bleeding though, definitely work a try x

Yes I use it everyday. Sorry for the late reply!

Hi,I am using HRT for pain and symptom management.

The mef/tranex Acid is more for the flow of bleeding and reduce the flow.

But maybe the GP thinks and feels that this may be the best way forward for you.

I take Ibroprofen and some gentle exercise to help with the pain.

But overall the coil has been the most effective

All the best

It really helped me - I was put on it before I was diagnosed with endo for my period pain and although it didn’t completely get rid of the pain, it meant i could actually stand up which was a god send. I had no side effects. If I remember rightly, I took it as soon as I felt the pain come on, basically instead of ibuprofen (remember you can’t take it with ibuprofen!) and always with food. I really hope it helps! X

I use it, if I take it as the instructions say then I do find it helps, alongside cocodamol or another painkiller. Just make sure to take it when you’ve eaten and not on an empty stomach x

I think Razzle Dazzle1 has given you very good feedback. I used to take Mefenamic Acid years ago and thought they didn't work. I then discovered I'd been taking them all wrong. You do need to start them a couple of days before your pain starts if you can and at the very least, at the slightest twinge of pain. If you wait for pain to start, like I used to, it is too late for them to do their job. Check your instructions and/or speak to a pharmacist, but I think they're best taken with food? This is to protect your stomach lining as long term use can cause some stomach problems. It may also be worth looking into taking probiotics. I've found this article that might start you off thinking about it... natren.com/blogs/news/ppi-s... medications have side effects but, I for one have been very grateful for the pain relief. However, I also think it's worth looking after your gut health as I've found good health starts in the gut. Also, it really is worth looking into getting a Tens machine. You can get small ones that will clip onto your clothing and they have really helped me. They don't take all the pain away, but they certainly have lessened the time I am in agony and made it more bearable. Hope some of this information helps you.
