Mefenamic acid

Just been given mefenamic acid from my gp. Never used this before so wondering what people’s feelings are about it? Does it work? Does it have any side effects etc

I've been using it for years . It's quite safe . But can sometimes make u sleepy and it can cause some constipation and stomach problems

Hi. Mefenamic acid is my wonder drug! I take 500mg 3times a day but always stick with the dosage the doctor has given. I use to take it everyday because the pain was everyday but now I only take it when I need it. Xx

Hi, was wondering if you need to take stomach tablets with these, I've just started taking these tablets

Hi, my GP advised me to start taking it a couple of days before I expected pain in my cycle (at that time it was regular). I believe this is because it takes a couple of days to have full effect.

Unfortunately I got significant side effects and had to stop. About 1 in 100 people get severe stomach pains, like me. I think they recommend taking it with food to try to reduce this.

It’s belongs to a group of drugs known as NSAIDS, which are commonly recommended for endo because they are both pain killers and anti inflammatory. However any of them used continuously can cause stomach problems after a few months. So if you need to use them all the time, they usually also prescribe something to protect the stomach.

I get pain every single day so I’m going to take it every day she’s only given me about 8/9 days worth and then I’ll be having a review on it. They did tell me to take it with food. Thanks x

Sounds good to have a review after 8/9 days. You should know by then if it works and your body tolerates it well. Good luck with it.

Hey Tinkerbell971,

I have taken mefenamic acid since I was a teenager for endometriosis.

It worked quite well for me, the only things I would reccommend is I found the capsules easier to swallow and always eat a meal beforehand as it isn't good to take on a emty stomach, it can make the pain a little worse.

I use it and it is Good for making them Abit lighter and less clotty.

I use it from first day of period ( 1 tablet 3 times a day ) for about first 3 days just whilst im heavy. U can still take painkillers and ibuprofen or naproxens Aswell.

I have been using it for a month and in terms of pain relief I have found it to be fairly effective. It doesn't always get rid of all of my pain when I'm at my worst but it certainly helps! It does make me quite sleepy though! Good luck Xx

I got started on it last week and have been taking it faithfully. In pain most days so prepared to try anything. Taking 1 x3 Times a day and increase it to two when I am at my worst ..xx

I’ve started taking 2 twice a day even though my gp said 2 three times a day. If my pain is bad around lunch time I will take another 2 but I’d rather just take them morning and night until I know how it affects me x
