Has anyone tried progesterone cream after a hysterectomy?

As I think my endo has returned after my hysterectomy and my oestrogen levels are high, I was wondering if it’s worth trying natural progesterone cream to balance the oestrogen. Has anyone had any success with easing endo symptoms this way or am I wasting my time?

You should take Utrogestan, it is the only *regulated* bodyidentical and true progesterone, its's derived from yams. The progesterone creams are unregulated and there is no evidence that they work so not a good bet. Everyone with Endo (along with Adeno and Fibroids) should be taking Utrogestan every day IMHO, as it helps to suppress the disease and reduce the symptoms. If anyone has had a hysterectomy and is on HRT they should most definitely be still taking and at a higher dose than most women. Not to mention it has excellent protective effects for the brain as we age, and helps with mood stabilisation and sleep.

Hi, thanks for the info. It looks like it is only available on prescription, which would be a problem for me. Because I’ve had a hysterectomy (but still have one ovary left) the g.p will only check my oestrogen level and not my progesterone. Basically, the theory is that you no longer need progesterone if you haven’t got a uterus (research says otherwise!). She checked my oestrogen level, which confirmed that I’m not menopausal but I’ve no idea if my progesterone is low or not. It’s a difficult one as I don’t even know for sure that the endo has returned or re-activated. I have bought some Emerita progesterone cream and I think that is yam based so maybe I should give it a try.

Hi there, you will need to see a menopause specialist GP then or give your GP the link to a free course being run by The Menopause Charity that is a certified course, it is free for one GP per clinic. Go to Dr Louise Newson's website, she is the leading expert of HRT and Menopause, she does lots of fact sheets for patients and doctors that you can pass on to your doc also. Are you not still under an Endo specialist though? They should be able to prescribe the Progesterone for you d2931px9t312xa.cloudfront.n...

Thank you, that’s great. No, I’m not under an endo specialist. I had endometriosis and adhesions removed about 10 years ago but since I’ve had the hysterectomy I’ve been told my pain is caused by adhesions- no investigations to confirm it though. All I’ve been offered is various pain relief and the mini pill (which I don’t want to take). Thanks anyway.

I would get yourself referred to a BSGE Endo centre of excellence then, as you and I know the chances of you having a recurrence are pretty high and also you should have a look at excising those adhesions

Unbeknown to me, the gynae consultant involved the hysterectomy (although she didn’t do the op) is listed on the BSGE site and the hospital is an accredited centre. She works NHS and private so I arranged a private consultation with her 6 months ago. She said it can’t be a gynae problem because uterus etc has been removed. She started going down the IBD route but I had various bowel investigations years ago and all was normal. That was before I knew I had endo etc. So I’ve given up on going back there!

Oh dear, was she a BSGE Accredited Endo surgeon though? Anyway, I'd try and find another surgeon that is an Endo one and try again now that you know you have Endo

I’m not sure. She’s a gynaecologist and she’s listed on the BSGE website. I’ll definitely look into other options. Thanks for your help.
