Dienogest & Mirena

Hi ladies

I'm after a bit of advice.

I have stage 4 endo already had loads of surgeries ; bowel resection, uretic stents, stoma etc. The only further surgery the hospital will do is a total clearance and as I'm only 34 they won't consider that and I understand that the risk of doing so are quite high at this age.

I gave birth 9 months ago following IVF and we can not afford any more try's (we had to self fund) so I'm willing to try anything really to try and get on top of pain. I agreed to the mirena coil which I got in October the bleeding is just starting to settle now. The hospital have just prescribed me dienogest to take along side it.

I've read the leaflet with the medication and there is a clear warning "you must not use hormonal contraceptives of any form, tablet, patch or intrauterine system whole taking"

I don't want to start until I've had clarity on this. Is anyone taking it whilst fitted with a coil?

I'm concerned there are serious contraindications?

I don’t have answers on this but usually if you discuss this with your pharmacist they’re brilliant help and should be able to clarify things for you xx

Hi Katie, do you mind me asking where your hospital is? I am trying to get my consultant to prescribe dienogest but no luck yet...

Hi katie26. Just wondered if you ever got any clarity regarding taking this medication with the mirena coil. I started it myself this past Tuesday and have had the worst pain ever and just wondered how you have got on yourself with it if you did end up taking it. Would greatly appreciate hearing about your experience as I don’t know what’s normal and abnormal at this point.

Hi Katie! Did you ever get any clarity on this? I'm in the exact same position - I have a mirena coil and the hospital has prescribed me Zalkya via my GP. Nobody told me that you can't take hormonal contraception with Zalkya despite knowing that I have an IUS. It wasn't until I read the insert at home that I realised it could be an issue! I can't find any information about it online so I'll probably have to try to call my specialist next week.
