Can the Mirena Coil cause fatigue/depression soon after insertion?

I am 6 days post lap surgery that treated endo & adenymiosis. The Mirena was placed in during surgery. It may be due to the op recovery, but I am feeling severely fatigued/groggy/woozy and could sleep all day. But Wondering, could this be Mirena side effects ? It’s making me quite stressed as I am healing brilliantly in a physical sense but the low stamina is alarming!

Any advice/info would be great, thanks so much x

Hi Rebecca,It's fairly normal to feel quickly fatigued for a while after a laparoscopy.

In the first days (for me, about 1-3 days, getting better daily) the anesthetic wears off - that really made me feel tired, and woozy the first day home.

The first lap I had, I was back at my desk job after 2 weeks and struggled to sit upright using my stomach muscles. By the end of the day, I was all tired out and needed to lie down to rest. I felt pretty normal after a month, and started to feel better about longer walks in two months.

This second one I've had, I had the Mirena coil added as well. I think the healing is taking longer because I had some adhesions removed, and one set of stitches is giving me some trouble as it slowly dissolves. So, I feel more quickly fatigued this time, and am off work for a bit longer. I think the Mirena & mini pill (to suppress periods) are making my mood less "peppy", but I'm guessing most of being tired is just from healing.

This is simply my best guess, comparing what it felt like for for me for a lap Vs a lap plus Mirena & mini pill.

Hi June,

Thanks so much for your reply. I definitely feel more reassured and less anxious about my recovery ! This is my second lap in 2.5 years and if there’s anything I’ve learned it’s that the operation bit is easy street and it’s the recovery that I find really unsettling. Funny you should mention about the adhesions, during this lap my consultant removed a lot of adhesions too which may be adding to my recovery related fatigue etc. What has your experience been like with the Mirena ? Has it helped with your endo at all?

The thought of having laps every few years is stressful so anything I can do to extend the period of time between each surgery would be ideal!

Thanks again for your response x x x

How are things for you now ?

Hi Rebecca,So far, my experience with the Minera has been ok, and I'm cautiously optimistic that it will be fine. I've had it for nearly a month now. After it was put in place (same session as laparoscopy), I had a little bit of spotting. The nurse told me ahead of time that would be normal.

My first good observation: I don't feel the Minera sitting there. This is really good - I had a copper coil years ago, and I always found it mildly annoying and uncomfortable.

I read that with the Minera, only 20% of women have suppressed periods by the end of the first year. So, I asked my GP what to do to reduce the endo period pain and to try to stop the periods. She told me it was ok to take a mini pill as well as Mirena, so I'm giving that a try. My hope is that this will also slow down the endo to some degree.

I'm hoping that this month with the Minera & mini pill together (1 pill per day), that the light spotting I had for a day and a half is all that I'll see of my period. That would be amazing if it were to be the case, but I have to wait for a few more days before I can be sure that the period has more or less been suppressed for this first cycle. I find this pretty exciting and I'm hopeful it is working. I was scared silly of getting my period this month because last month's period saw me to A&E twice in one weekend by ambulance. If I can take a pass on emergency trips, I will be very relieved! :)

Hopefully the Minera will be ok for you. Different people seem to respond differently.

I havent got too much advice but after my operation i had "post surgery blues" i called it abd i felt down for awhile. Your body goes through a lot with surgery so i think its ok to feel a bit off for awhile. Maybe keep track of your moods, sleeping patterns and when you feel woozy hopefully you see it gradually fade ! You are recovery and adjusting to hormones try your best to relax as much as possible for best healing outcome. If in a few weeks you feel the same or it gets worsr contact your doctor. Best wishes 😁 x
