My friend is taking these for a prolapsed disk, she said they are great, helps her sleep a from of antidepressant and helps with the pain too. She suggested I ask for them they seem to tick all my requirements off. I’m not sure how long they take to work likely up to 2 weeks

Hi, it's really important to read the leaflet in the box. Everyone is different as some will get side effects and others won't. It can take up to 6 weeks for this medication to work fully. It's an anti depressant but it will be provided in a far lower dose for pain relief. Some people say it messes with their minds.

I would read the leaflet definitely. Here is an e copy of it:

Patient leaflet:

Nhs:

I use it and haven’t experienced any negative side effects, it’s different for everybody but tends to take a couple of weeks to work and can be really effective! If you’re taking it for pain relief you tend to be on a different dose to how it’s used as an antidepressant so don’t worry too much but contact your gp if you’re concerned x

I was told by pain consultant that it can take 6-8 weeks to work properly. I think I might be getting a bit more benefit adding Pregabalin.I’m told it’s nerve pain but not fully convinced as still have bowel issues.

It’s more of a go to for nerve pain, recognised more for that than antidepressant. I wouldn’t have personally taken it from GP as Id have suspected ulterior motives 😂

You’ll only know if it suits is trying it.

Yes and I love it!! I was frequently experiencing electrical shock like pains, mostly just under my right collar bone and right leg and since being on amitriptyline they have really decreased. It's not to say I'm pain free, I'm suffering a flare up currently but the nerve pain is decreased but I'm still suffering other pains. The first couple of weeks I was out like a light after 3 hours of taking it, it was bliss!! unfortunately not so much now I'm used to it. I take it at 10mg every night at 7pm and that way I'm not too drowsy in the morning.

It's for nerve pain, so unless your period pain is nerve related probably not from what I understand. I take mefenamic acid, paracetamol and resort to codeine when I can't take it anymore on my periods and the days before it.

It's worked really well for me, and helped with sleep. The downside for me is that I get the side effect of weight gain (but everyone's different).
