Appointment - coil/pills

Hi guys,

I’ve got my second gynae telephone appointment this evening. I know they’re going to want me to have the coil but I’m really reluctant to for a couple of reasons. 1. Even having a speculum for smear is very painful so I’m terrified insertion will be excruciating and 2. I’ve heard you can have 6 months of hell and my job does not have access to toilets when I need them and I cannot do my job easily if my bleeding and pain gets worse.

I’m currently on cerazette and have been for 6 months, I’m still getting irregular spotting which is frustrating and I feel I’m never going to have an intimate life again.

I got on so well with the combined pill but then had a migraine so they took me off it and I’m so so gutted

Has anybody got any experiences with a different mini pill or injection or even the coil just for some advice as to what to ask for tonight?

Thank you so much and sorry for the long post.

Hello

So first remember you do not need to yet anything you don't want to.

Second the coil you can have it fitted under GA. I did because like you I get pain with smear tests. Literally just had the ha for getting the coil out wasn't part of a surgery or anything.

Yes the coil can take 6 months to settle. For me I didn't bleed any more but my pain did increase for the first 2/3 months but then it settled. I've had it for 18months and for me it's been great and worth those couple of months off hell. As although it was alot of pain for a couple of months the fact it lasts 5 years has made it worth it. But I get that it isn't for everyone.

Hi there,

Back in March of 2020 I had Laparoscopy and had the marina coil fitted during the surgery. After I woke up and came around that evening I found the coil to be rather irritating and itchy down below.

As far I can remember a month or two went by and found I had started having a lot of pelvic pain which made me feel very down and depressed! I used a hot water bottle to help ease the pain and it helped tremendously! However, everyday was the same in terms of suffering from this pelvic pain. It really affected my everyday life! Even when going out shopping the pain would return and had to literally pace myself to even walk slow.

When I contacted my GP, I was told to "persevere with it" as this would take time for my body to adjust to it. I did try to "persevere" but the pain would always come back again for e.g. It first started in the early afternoons and as time went on the pain would come back during the early evening. It was very strange!

I did try to incorporate daily morning pelvic floor stretches by using videos from You Tubers which really helped!

As months went by I finally decided to have the coil removed but at the first attempt my regular GP had trouble removing it as unfortunately it become embedded! Sigh. :( After that I went to another practice to try and have it removed again but no luck. I think after that I had an x-ray to see if it was still there but no sign of it and in the end after all that drama it eventually fell out by itself! Amazing! :D LOL

A few months went by again and I was still feeling the pelvic once more but early this year funnily enough the pain magically disappeared!

Oh I forgot to mention I was on the pill for about three months. This may have contributed with subsiding of the pelvic pain I was experiencing. I decided to come off of it because I was worried about the long terms side effects it would have on my body/system. I also took the pill because after my period I was continuing to bleed quite heavy and this eventually stopped and regulated my periods.

It has been about two months and have not experienced those hideous pelvic pains except for this month. Two days before my period I had sharp knife pains and this really scared me because I am a highly sensitive person especially it comes to pain. For this reason, I am considering going back on the pill. I will see.

The pill I was prescribed was Gedarel. I did not experience any headaches with these. Have you tried these ones before? Maybe speak with your GP and see which pill is most suitable for you. I had the same problem with a different pill too and thankfully had no side effects with this one!

Good luck with speaking with your gynecologist this evening! Hope you get the answers you are looking for!

If you have anymore questions, I will be happy to answer.

From my personal experiencing with using the coil, I would not recommend it at all! For all the reasons I experienced above! :( Everyone is different but it's entirely up to you! I have read that you can be put out when having and taking the coil out. Do ask about this though and see what they say. 👍

Hi, that’s so useful thank you so much. I think I will avoid it if possible. I was on gedarel and it worked brilliantly however I then suffered a terrible migraine so I had to come off it and they don’t want to let me go on any more combined pills. But I will see what they say later. Thank you so much.

I know it doesn’t work for everyone but the coil literally gave me my life back. I did however have it inserted during a laparoscopy and subsequently had it removed after four years and another inserted during another minor operation. My first period was awful then I had about six months of slight bleeding occasionally and some uncomfortable but not particularly painful moments but personally for me it’s been the best decision I ever made. I hope you find what works for you.

I am on cerazette and was advised by my consultant to take two pills per day to stop breakthrough bleeding, you could try that? It has been successful in stopping all bleeding!

Unfortunately I have been on 2 a day but thank you for the suggestion!

I am on the combined pill lucette and a migraine sufferer which I take amitriptyline every night to prevent. I still suffer on my 7 day break with a migraine every now and then but for me and as discussed with my doctor the pill controls my pain and periods and was affecting my life previously so it was agreed I could continue with this!

That’s great! I’ve now been prescribed Yasmin pill to try which is combined and I will monitor migraines and take sumatriptan if needed. So fingers crossed this will help! X

Lucette is the cheap version of yasmin which I was on for years and it was fantastic for me! I just get Lucette as it’s the cheaper version!
