Pain after sex with Mirena IUD

Has anyone experienced pain/cramping after sex with Mirena IUD?

I had it fitted in Oct ‘20 and bled (with extreme cramping) up until 24th Dec! Still having odd spotting most days, but after sex I am in agony in my lower abdomen. It’s not achey period-like cramps, but stabbing pains. After this happened the first time, my GP put me on antibiotics incase it may have been an infection from the IUD and had an ultrasound and all is in it’s place.

But yet now it is after everytime I have sex. I am at a total loss and not sure if going back to GP is silly as they’ll tell me they’ve covered everything and all is fine with it?!

TIA x

Hi LoverofLife1 Alas I am no fan of the coil it has caused more problems with friends than good, on saying that I and sure there are ladies on this site that will say the opposite. As for feeling silly going back to your GP, you are not, your GP has a duty of care to keep you pain free. Good Luck

Hi, I had this issue both times I had a coil (copper and merina). I'm not sure if it was the position of my cervix but if I had any sort of deep penetrative sex where the cervix is touched (which I prefer) I was in pain both during and after sex (plus bleeding). It was horrible worrying if it was going to be painful. The coil/cervix was checked multiple times and it was positioned correctly but I had other side effects that led to their removal. I still have pain sometimes due to endo, but not all the time. Keep an eye on it and see if it is compatible for you. Change positions durung sex if you need to for shallow penetration (or look at the ohnut rings to prevent deeper penetration). Good luck!
