I had the mirena coil put in about a month ago to help with heavy painful periods. I am currently on my period but I haven't seen much change with the pain or heaviness. It's still early days of having it fitted so I will give it longer to take effect but I'm just wondering if anyone knows how long it usually takes to start helping.
I haven't been diagnosed with endometriosis and have been told I shouldn't have a laparoscopy until I have tried different contraceptives due to the potential risks of the surgery. But I have every symptom of endometriosis and am desperate to control the symptoms so I'd like to know how long to try this mirena coil before moving on to another treatment.

I think my consultant also said six months (that was 10+ years ago) but I began to notice an improvement after 2-3 months. Then bliss for 5+ years, followed by removal, as I was, by then, well-and-truly post-menopause. I wish I'd had one fitted decades earlier!
I have endometriosis and had a laparoscopy 10 years ago. All fine until about 3 years ago when it came back with a vengeance! Had the coil fitted after lots of debate and it's changed my life. I know it doesn't work for everyone and I had read horror stories, but for me I experienced similar pain/symptoms to normal for about 2/3 months then everything just stopped. I no longer have heavy periods, I bleed very lightly for a couple of days a month, I rarely get any period pains and when I do they can be controlled with a hot water bottle. I have had an infection in the first year which was pretty grim but cleared with antibiotics and has been fine since. People told me to try to stick with it for 6 months before making a decision and I'm so glad I did it. I hope you have a similar experience.
