Should I be worried about high prolactin?

Around 3/4 months ago I had a blood test after coming off the contraceptive pill. They found my levels of prolactin were really high. I wasn't too bothered at the time because I wasn't experiencing any of the symptoms associated with it. The doctor told me prolactin can be raised in times of stress and, at the time, I was worried because I had an upcoming laparoscopy. She also told me that some people experience irregular or missed periods with high prolactin. But, at the time, I was regular and had a period every month.

However, this month, I haven't had my period and I am extremely concerned as I remember what she said about high prolactin being a cause. It's been a week and 3 days since I was supposed to have had my period and I don't feel any signs of coming on either. She told me to repeat the blood test after my laparoscopy which I haven't been for yet but will try to go for this week. I'm almost 100% sure that my prolactin levels are probably causing this. Does anyone know anything more about high prolactin? Is it something to be concerned about? :(

Another thing- last December ( so a year ago ) I had a scan done on Harley street which showed polycystic ovaries. I then went for a blood test to check for hormonal imbalance but it came back normal, so I was told it wasn't PCOS. This is another thing that concerns me as I know people with PCOS don't have regular periods either :( I'm only 23 and nowhere near ready to have children but I'm always constantly worrying that my ovaries aren't working properly and I'll never be able to have children!

Hi Amy, probably not much help but i suffer from my pituitary gland producing too much prolactin and they can't explain why my body is. If it's raised by a certain level they will take a course of action (For example when mines came back high i was sent for an MRI of the brain to rule out any tumors) thankfully it came back all clear back in 2017. High prolactin levels can act as a blocker to having children, i.e if it's raised it will be harder to catch, but it's not raised ALL the time so try not to worry and you can be referred to a specialist, i have went on to have a little baby. Hope you get sorted x
