I had an MRI with contrast about 2 weeks ago. The actual scan I was in about 30 mins but had to wait another 20 minutes after in case of any reaction to the dye or buscopan. I don't think my consultant asked for anything in particular to checked so don't know if checking your kidneys could make things a little longer. It really wasn't bad at all to be honest. Have you had an MRI before? This was my first time.😊

It will be my first time - what is buscopan? What was that for?

Appranently it's to slow your bowel movements down so they can get better pictures.😊

Makes sense my

Paperwork mentions contrast but not buscopan

You might not need that then but it's all done through the same cannula anyhow. I hope everything all goes ok for you. As I say it wasnt at all that bad.xx

Is the contrast put in through a cannula? Where is that placed?

For me they put a cannula in my arm, same place you would have a blood test and then half way through my scan they injected the dye into the tube. It doesnt hurt at all.😊

Hi Caroline84, I had a blood test one week before the MRI. They check your levels to make sure your kidney is working well to process the contrast. No mention of buscopan on my form either but a quick search of what I was having done informed me that it is used to relax the bowels so they don’t move during the MRI. When I had the scan, the technician told me they don’t use the contrast anymore so I ended up just having the buscopan. I got clear images that enabled a diagnosis.

I had one done in December, took about 30 mins. The time goes quickly when your in there though I thought I was only in 10mins. Only thing is that it is quite loud but they give you headphones and music. I had my mum with me (even though I’m 22🤦🏼‍♀️) and they let her sit in there as I was very nervous so you can take someone with you to help. When I came out I felt a little sicky and spaced but it’s just where you can go a little disoriented but it passed after 5-10mins, get a sugary drink after or something but honestly it’s not as bad as it sounds and you won’t be fully in there so don’t worry If your clostraphobic or however it’s spelt like I am xxx hope all goes okay xxx

Possibly a really silly question but how does the contrast get into the pelvis?

As it’s injected directly into a vein it runs through ur body helping them distinguish ur organs better xx

Hi, I had an MRI a few months ago without dye or buscopan as I have previous reactions, scan can take anything between 20-45 minutes depending on how many pictures they need.

Mine did show a blockage in my right ureter so it is good for checking kidneys.

I won’t lie they are daunting for ur first time but honestly they r over before u know it n most hospitals will give u ear phones to listen to music. Hope all goes well xx

Ask for an eye mask if you have issues with small places. I don't like looking at the top of the machine as it might feel like you are in a very tight space.

The time of MRI scan depends on what it is to be checked. My MRI took an hour. And they were checking for my pelvic veins abnormality.

Hi all I have one tomorrow with the dye. Did your MRI on the pelvis indicate anything? I had a similar one a few months ago on my abdomen but that came back normal. I have my lap booked for 31 march.

It’s nothing to worry about. It doesn’t hurt, The contrast just helps to give a clearer picture. The buscopan isn’t always given- it relaxes your bowels so that they don’t move during the scan. It can last anywhere from 25 to 45 mins xx
