How does the GP actually refer to the BSGE centre? GP has agreed and attempted to make the referral but it is clearly a choose and book letter for general gynae. Looking to understand how they should be referring to the BSGE centre so I can try and get it done correctly?
BSGE referral process: How does the GP... - Endometriosis UK
BSGE referral process
You note down a few close bsge centre near to you and go to your gp and ask them you would like to be referred to either one of those endo centres, they will search to see if there is any appointments available under the booking section and request for a referral. You then will get that date confirmation front the gp printed out with a password if you wanted to change the appointment. That's all. This is how I done it after being fobbed off gynae for 14months on constant hospital admissions and resulting in stage 4. I am now endo clear since last August 2019. Good luck
Hey!
Not sure what the BSGE centres are like near you but for me there was just 2 BSGE qualified doctors at a local hosptial near me so I made sure I requested them by name at the GPs. I then rang up the appointments number at the hospital to ensure I was put down for one of those doctors and she said it was an open clinic but she will try ensure it's on a day one of those doctors usually works. As it was an open clinc and one of those doctors were the lead doctor on site it meant I might not see him and could be assessed by someone else in his team - not BSGE. When I got to the hospital I said to the receptionist I want to see that doctor and I'll wait for them and she said that's fine. I waited 2 hours but I got to see him and then was under his care after that.
My GP did this initially but I think it was because they didn't really understand the procedure either. I just called them and explained the centres I needed to be referred to and they sorted it straight away
The GP needs to refer you directly to the BSGE centre and the funding is via nhs England and not the usual CCG which is where choose and book gets you.
Your GP needs to write or email or call the centre and give a case history and the centre then will review to ensure you meet the criteria and make you an appt
Referral isn't through Choose and Book (E-referrals) it is direct with the centre as this is a tertiary service commissioned by NHS England and not the CCG.
There are referral criteria which are confirmed or suspected severe endo or non-severe endo that hasn't been adequately treated in gynaecology.
This is the treatment specification you can give to your GP:
Did you join my group as we have detailed files with all the correct procedure. I gave you the link before. x
Yes I have joined and found it incredibly useful thanks.
I have chosen a centre and spoken to them they have stated the GP refers electronically to them. GP has agreed. GP has attempted to refer but it is a choose and book for general gynaecologist that I have been given. Was hoping to find out more about exactly what electronic system they need to use so when I speak to the I can try and guide to get it right.
They mean to refer by email directly as referrals aren't through choose and book.
Refer your GP to page 6 of the link above:
'Referral
Patients with known severe disease, which has not been adequately treated or has recurred, are likely to be referred by primary care clinicians. Gynaecologists in secondary care, who identify severe deeply infiltrating endometriosis or recto-vaginal disease at laparoscopy, or open surgery, will refer patients from secondary care to an Endometriosis centre. Laparoscopic images and or video, of suitable quality and format will be included with the referral wherever they are available as this may prevent the need for repeat laparoscopic pelvic survey after referral.'
and page 10:
'3.4 Any acceptance and exclusion criteria and thresholds
The service will accept referrals from GPs and secondary care clinicians in Gynaecology,
Colorectal surgery and Urology.'
Thank you that’s very helpful
