A BSGE centre?

becausemanson profile image

Seeing as my local GP's are extremely rude and have no interest it seems in helping me, how difficult would it be to get an appointment at a BSGE specific centre. Would it take a referral from a doctor first?

Has anyone been to a specific Endo centre? And what was it like?

You can only self refer if you go to a private BSGE accredited centre. NHS centres will require a referral from either your GP or gynaecologist.

The BSGE centre I went to is private only and was only an option for me as I have private health care cover.

Not all BSGE centres are equal sadly, some are better than others.

We're not allowed to name individual centres on this forum but can through personal messages. I know of a couple NHS BSGE centres that come with patient recommendations (no personal experience of them) so if you want to PM I can let you know these.

If you live in the UK and have a diagnosis of endo then you have the right to request a referral to one of the BSGE centres on the list under NHS choices - it doesn't

have to be your closest one. Have a look at Lindles' posts which explain NHS guidelines and your right to referral so you can point these out to your GP if he/she refuses to refer you.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes, Jo

Hi Becausemanson,

You didnt say what part of the united kingdom you reside in so, i dont know how difficult it would be for yourself.I went to my GP and after constantly harassing him was reffered to department of gynaecology Chelsea and West minister hospital Fulham which is a BSGE approved centre.

The consultant i initially saw was humble enough to tell me she is not a specialist in Endometriosis and re reffered me to Dr R Richardson who is an Endometriosis specialist in the same hospital so far its been an 8 weeks wait as his clinic is only twice a week.

I finally see him on the 7th of August(He can also be seen privately for a fee but i havent got that much money so sadly ....).

Best of luck.

How long has it taken you to finally get referred? And how severe is your Endo?

My doctors are still refusing a lap and referring to a specialist as well. They don't know enough about it to help me which is annoying. Even breaking down to a doctor and telling her the pain is so bad I cant sleep or eat wasn't enough for painkillers, a shot, or a referral. I feel so alone and helpless.

Sorry for the late response,I have had Endo since 2008 but had a surgery and was pain free till 2011.We noticed there might be a problem when i had two failed IVF cycles plus very heavy and painful periods.

The entire Journey for this second reocurrence so far has taken 12 weeks and my endo is stage III till am told otherwise. The first 8 weeks the GP kept me on Diclofenac and co-codramodol and sent me for all the blood tests in the world you can think of...and scans/ultrasound.

When he saw there was no relief and my pain was so bad that i was off work(I have resigned so i still have good references, better than being sacked as it was coming to that stage) he sent me to the gynaecologist who i went to see with a few old/new documents so that might have made it easier, she did an ultrasound which was the most painful in my life as my right side tummy and right side back were inflamed and very Tender.

She has said it is above her and reffered me to an Endo specialist the only one in the Hospital whom am yet to see. Some days i feel am going crazy and cant wait but the thought of coughing out 200 just for a private consultation keeps me patient.

Some surgeons are BSGE accredited and registered but work at your, well, bog standard gynae ward on a hospital. I recently had a laparoscopy at my local hospital, and the surgeon is BSGE accredited even though I received the surgery on the NHS. Here is the BSGE website and list of centres: bsge.org.uk/ec-BSGE-accredi...

If you look at the name of surgeons you could try see which ones work at your local hospital and request a referral from your GP. If that fails you could try your local sexual health clinic, who will probably be more understanding and willing to help. If I think of anything more I'll let you know, but hope this helps.
