Hiya ,

My endometriosis symptoms are worsening and the nhs waiting list is over 9 months right now for laparoscopic surgery.

Has anyone got this done privately and how much did it cost? Would you recommend getting it done privately or sticking with the nhs waiting list?

Thank you!

Update:

Thank you all for the replies!! I was looking for costs and got a really realistic range of prices. You’re all so helpful and I hope things get/ have gotten better for you post surgery xx

Hi hun,

i was in the same position as you. I needed laparoscopy to remove large endometriomas that were causing me severe pain. I was on morphine and tramadol every single day. Always high on serious amount of painkillers. They only seemed to take the edge off. I ended up in a&e so many times, but was given stronger pain relief each time. Was told i still had to wait 6 months. This was seriously impacting the quality of my life so i went private. I chose an endo specialist and the surgery cost around 4 grand. This was 2 years ago. So glad i decided to go private, i really couldn't see myself going on any longer.

It all depends on how bad your symptoms are, and whether you feel like you can put up with them for that long. Really hope you find some relief soon x

Hi,

Sorry you are suffering. I decided to go private for my second lap, because the waiting list was so long, but also because they changed my surgeon to a general gynaecologist, rather than an endo-specialist. It cost around £4k but it was totally worth it. If you have the money and can't wait then I'd say go for it. Good luck xx

Ha mam,

I was in same position as you. My endometriosis was worsening and increased double in size up to 16 cm. Through NHS the que was very long and I was waiting for my lap but then due to my pain we decided to go private. My laparoscopy is done 1 and half month ago and since then I had very less pain at the sight of surgery because its healing inside. My surgery was complicated but the surgeon didi it well. That surgeon is best surgeon I've ever met, endometriosis surgery is his bread and butter, thank God I went private. It cost me 6k.

I'm in a similar situation - i need complex excision as I have 2 large cysts and a frozen pelvis. Am currently in medical menopause on prostap injections so my symptoms are somewhat controlled but not knowing whether I'll be able to have children until I know whether they can save my ovaries or womb was killing me and I was told I wouldn't likely get my surgery on the NHS until October.

So I went for a private consultation with a specialist and I'm having my surgery tomorrow - luckily my parents are paying as there is no way I could afford it.

Hi. I was in this same dilemma just a month ago. I decided to stay on the Nhs list as the cost formy laparoscopy was going to be well over 10k. Surprisingly, although I was told the NHS waiting list was 9 months to a year, I got an appt in February for the first part of my op! I’m so glad I didn’t go private as i really couldn’t have afforded it.

Really depends on your circumstances and luck!

I was £5,500 for the surgery and my initial consultation which also included an overnight stay as I love quite far from the hospital and was ill after surgery. I was never getting taken by the NHS as the waiting times in certain Scottish hospitals are horrendous x

I have the same issue. I went private in order to get my diagnosis of endo in the first place and this did enable me to get a quick gynae refferal to the NHS gynae dept. However there is no guarantee as to when I will get the lap done so I'm supposed to be getting a second opinion (private again) at some stage this month. I hope a decision will be made soon as the pain is awful.

Please do your research if you go private and let us know how it goes! 💕

What I would recommend is to get an EXCELLENT excision surgeon. Some work privately, some within the NHS, but so do not so capable surgeons as well. Private doesn't necessarily equate to better care, it depends on the surgeon. Sometimes a better surgeon in your area works within the NHS. The best piece of advice I can give you is to research the surgeon you have chosen thoroughly -regarding laparoscopic training, amount of experience, techniques, reviews.
