Hi LoneWolf91

You get a “flare” when you first start Prostap treatment as which can cause both prolonged heavy period-type bleeding and sporadic light spotting. It should settle in the first 4-6 weeks of treatment before Prostap fully suppresses your cycle. I’m sorry your prescribing consultant didn’t warn you about this, it would have saved you a lot of stress.

I hope it settles soon, x X x

I had the first injection 29th august and I had my period 1 week after which has been very long to say the least including spotting but so far no bleeding or period has happened.....but I'm getting period cramps and I'm worried incase a period happens again this month but I got told I wont get anymore periods with prostap is this normal to have the cramps and no period will happen or?

I’ve had Prostap twice - the first time was just for 6 months and I had bleeding (sometimes light, but mostly heavy) for about the first 4 weeks before the bleeding disappeared completely. Then I had a much longer course of Prostap (several years), but it wasn’t great and I experienced bleeding (often heavy) on and off for the first 14 months before it stopped completely.

Sadly the severity of the flare and any other treatment side effects depend upon how your body reacts to the treatment. Generally they say the initial “flare” of your endometriosis symptoms can last up to 6 weeks so it may still settle in the next week or so.

I’d definitely speak to your consultant about the symptoms you are having though so they can keep a good record and can investigate and offer advice if the bleeding and cramps continue much longer.

Fingers and toes crossed it will settle soon, x X x

I'm into the 5th week of the injection but I'm not bleeding or out but getting period symptoms! I already had the flare period etc that last since 7th September till the end of September.......I dont understand why I'm getting the period symptoms again when prostap supposed to stop periods

The “flare” can exacerbate any of your usual endometriosis symptoms - bleeding is the most obvious usually but also the pain and inflammation and fatigue. Hopefully they will settle.

Prostap works by overloading your pituitary’s gnrh receptors until they shut down and dramatically reduces your body’s production of oestrogen (and various other hormones). It’s this reduction of oestrogen that suppresses your endometriosis symptoms. But it takes a while and the “flare” can fluctuate - so your symptoms might get worse for a couple of weeks, then be ok for a few days, then get worse again etc. until they finally settle out. But it depends on the person - some people only have a flare for a couple of weeks, for some it can last a couple of months, for others the treatment never settles and they decide to quit and try other treatment options.

I’m so sorry your specialist didn’t explain any of this to you before you started the treatment as it is horrible trying to work out what’s going on and whether things are working as they should, but it may just be that your body needs a little more time to adjust, so don’t get disheartened yet. I do think you should speak to your consultant and your GP asap about your symptoms though - they may have advice on how to manage them until they settle. Prostap is also quite a strong treatment so it is also really important that it is properly managed and monitored to ensure you get the best result from it.
