Pain Relief

Hi all,

I had my laparoscopy 5 weeks ago and have been diagnosed with endometriosis, wasn’t told where it is or how bad.

But i’m having my first period since the op and wondered if anyone had any good pain relief tips?

I take ibuprofen and paracetamol, as well as have a hot water bottle, but they don’t do much.

Thanks for the help in advance! x

I found tiger balm can help (red one), other than that your GP would be able to give stronger meds x

Was your laparoscopy done by a BSGE Endometriosis Specialist? Did they carry out ‘Ablation’ or ‘Excision’?

Ring the gynaecologist secretary and ask for a report of your surgery ie. what was done and what was discovered. Surprised that they have not told you still after 5 weeks.

What you are doing for pain relief is exactly what I was doing. If pain relief not working you may need something stronger. After my diagnosis in 2000 and ‘ablation’ (which only burns of the surface of Endometriosis) I was put on combined pill ( this helps with pain and bleeding but only masks the Endometriosis. It doesn’t cure it as Endometriosis produces its own oestrogen). Excision by an experienced BSGE Endo Specialist or Nook Endo Specialist is the best treatment for you especially if you have progressive Endometriosis.

Most Pelvic MRIs can pick up progressive Endometriosis like mine which was Stage 4 (Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis and Adenomyosis) but you must also make sure the radiologist is experienced in recognising signs of Endometriosis too.

Gynaecologists as well as radiologists are not all experienced enough to treat or pick up signs of Endometriosis.

I have no idea, it was carried out by Dr Arya, the gynaecologist who i’ve been seeing for the past year about my pain. All I know is that they burnt out the endometriosis found, my ovaries and tubes were fine but found it behind my uterus.

To be honest I had just come round from the op and was by myself when they told me, so can’t really remember much of what they said.

I am already on the combined pill, which doesn’t help with my pain at all.

I think if I went to my doctors they’d have the report on my file as I was instructed to hand a letter in to my GPs office after my surgery. And would give me some better drugs hopefully!!

Thank you for your reply though! Will definitely ask about my report and see what’s going on!

I would definitely recommend doing your research on this. I’ve learnt so much from this group on Facebook.

Knowledge is empowering and your gynaecologists will realise this. He/she may or may not admit that you need a more specialist consultant. Mine did after I asked, through the NHS ‘Right to Choose’. Got my gynaecologist to refer me to a Nook and BSGE Endometriosis Specialist I researched through the Nancy’s Nook Endometriosis Education Group. This group is a closed group and to join you have to answer 3 security questions. Then read their Units/research files/recommendations on Endometriosis and the posts on the pioneering Endometriosis specialists treating many thousands of women, giving them a better quality of life.

I must clarify though that it’s not a support group.

It’s easy enough to trust your gynaecologist has your best interests at heart but this is not always the case.

A gynaecologist carrying out ‘ablation’ for Endometriosis is definitely a red flag.

I'm sorry to hear that you're in pain :(

I was prescribed tablets called Mefenamic Acid 250mg, it's a different form of ibuprofen that are for period pains etc. Worth to ask your GP x

Thank you for your reply! I will try to get a doctors appointment for tomorrow to get some medication, and will ask to see if that’s something I would be allowed to take! xxx
