Experience of Surgery Abroad? (Wellborn Endometriosis Center - Romania)

Hi everyone,

To cut a very long story short, some of my documents were 'mislaid' and I have just discovered that I am not on the waitlist for surgery in the UK for my Stage IV endometriosis. After waiting for 6 months, thinking that I was(!), I am now back at square one.

I am just wondering if anyone has any experience of excision surgery abroad? I cannot afford private treatment in the UK but need surgery ASAP so I am currently in contact with a surgeon in Romania (Dr Mitroi) who is supposedly an excellent endo surgeon but I don't know if I should take the risk. I am worried that if I fly out there that something might go wrong. I am hoping that some of you lovely warriors have experience and can put my mind at ease - or tell me I'm being crazy and should wait for the NHS!|

Thank you in advance!

Hello I personally would not go abroad for surgery as I would worry something would go wrong and I would have issues getting home, the language barrier too. I understand your frustration as I was on the NHS waiting list for 8 months and I still didn’t have a date for a laparoscopy, it was ridiculous. I ended up going private as I couldn’t go on any longer the way I was. You could speak to the NHS board who will have a complaints officer, state your case and ask what they will do about it. Ask go back to your GP and ask them to write to the gynaecology department and tell them your symptoms are getting worse. You could also go to your local MP. You are meant to be seen within 12 weeks in Scotland anyway, I don’t know where you are located. I only found this out after I had my surgery and paid for it, wish I had gone via my MP.

You can also have a private consultation and mine cost £240, you can remain on the NHS list for surgery.

Some thought for you!

Hope you are well today x

Hi AllthatGlitters! Thank you for the quick reply and for the advice. I got in contact with the complaints officer and they are now dealing with it and will get back to me. She has been absolutely great so far so I am really hoping that I can get referred quickly and fingers crossed bumped up the list a bit! x

Hi. I recently had surgery with dr. Mitroi. I definitely recommend travelling abroad for surgery. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it.
