Period and holiday

I go to Thailand a week on Friday and still haven’t had my period this month. I do have the mirena in but I have been having monthly periods since I got it in September. I don’t know if my periods are just stopping now but I don’t want to risk being on my period on holiday. Is there anything I could do?

I think norethisterone is the "period delay pill" that you can buy from boots and other places like that which is the standard way to go. However, with endo there doesn't seem to be much predictability with how hormones affect each individual! I was given it to stop an 11 week constant bleed as my combined pill, even though taken back to back without breaks, was just not working with me, and norethisterone did stop the bleeding for a little while but it returned on day 4. I also noticed a huge drop in mood, but I don't know whether my dose would have been higher than a standard period-delaying dose given my situation which could have affected the intensity of side effects for me. And I had a huge pain flare up which nearly sent me to hospital, but this is probably due to the change in hormones from the combined pill without a break for many months to a progestogen-only pill rather than the pain being caused by that pill. So, if you're using the mirena coil which is also progestogen-only then it might not rock the boat as much as it did with me. The leaflet inside will say not to take if you have ever experienced unexplained vaginal bleeding outside of periods, but given that my gynae prescribed me it rather than going to boots and picking it up, I assume it is safe. Either way, you probably ought to run it past your GP given their knowledge of both your symptoms and the drug's side effects to see whether it is worth trying. For example, if the mirena coil has made your periods light enough that pain is manageable with simple painkillers and the bleeding not too heavy to be on the go, then it might not be worth adding something new into the mix.

Hope you manage to enjoy a bleed-free holiday!

Hi, I had the same situation. I took Northistorone - fabulous (from your GP) with-in two days of taking them you won’t have a period until two days after you stop. I took them for 3 weeks as long holiday. Enjoy your holls
