Fed up in hospital

Came into hospital this morning on advice of gp. Was admitted straight away to the gyne ward, in a HUGE amount of pain. Had bloods done and spoke to a consultant around 5ish who said they are keeping me in to manage the pain. Had morphine, tramadol, codiene, paracetamol and anti-sickness so far today. Still in pain, a nurse has just come in and said im being moved right now to surgical ward as they need the bed and im medically fit, bearing in mind i am booked in for a hysterectomy on the 28th of this month. am i in the wrong to be feeling abit pissed off right now??

Hi Lisa

I would ask them to explain how you are medically fit having to take that amount of medication. However, if the move to a surgical ward is to help move you along in the process for hysterectomy then a surgical ward is not a bad thing. If you are still in pain though, I would ask whether they would consider either drugs called pregabalin or gabapentin. This can help with nerve pain. And if not already, consider putting you on that. That may help. X

Hope you feel better soon. Take a look at my post on suggestions for pain relief.

Blessings. Elise. X

Hi elise,

thankyou for the reply, iv been told it was because they needed the bed up on the ward. They actually said im going home this morning, iv asked to see the doctor before i leave because the whole point of me being here is to manage the pain which isn't happening. Feel like crying!!!

Stand your ground. Being in so much pain is not right what so ever. Ok so they need the bed but you do too. Stay strong, and tell them that your not happy to be discharged.

I've been I similar situations in hospital over the years. I myself am only just realising it's all due to endo.

Wishing you well.

Ria xx

Its just so frustrating that with 3 weeks to go until surgery they can still make you feel like your wasting there time :-( i am absolutely exhausted xxx

Really sorry for you.

Similar happened to me back in August and they kept me in for a week, just kept medicating me, no investigations until I’d already been there for 6 days and they decided to do an internal ultrasound which is already said would cause me more agony. They sent me home the next morning and just said it was an endo flare.

As you’re down for the hysterectomy anyway I would be very firm with them if you feel you have the energy and tell them you’re not happy to be discharged. Have you seen a consultant since they said they are sending you home?

Sending you well wishes xx

The consultant came to see me about an hour ago, left me on tears. Very arrogant. Kept saying 'let me just wave my magic wand' anyway the accute pain team are coming to see me around lunch time to try sort out a med plan, consultant said no chance of surgery before date so to think positive as only 28 days to go but to be prepared for his words 'a shitty month'. Fuck my ACTUAL life xxx

Hi there.

You poor thing, I can completely empathise with how you're feeling right now, I have been in your position countless times and I'm yet to truly figure out how to stay calm. My family hate it if I ever end up going because of unbearable pain because there is always an incident with arrogant, unsympathetic staff members and I always end up in tears, often coming home in a worse state than I went in.

I always take with me, also, all the medication I have at home, for those inevitable times when I have to wait 3+ hours for my next dose of painkillers, despite having reminded them countless times and each time being treated like I'm such a nuisance for asking!

It's so bad that in just over a week I'm having my second laparoscopy and I'm already worried about the after care and trying to arrange it so I pretty much have so the medication they can give me in hospital at home with me, awful isn't it?!

I do realise that this doesn't help you know how to handle tour current situation but please know you are not alone, it appears that this is the general ethos of staff when it comes to a problem that can't be shown by any test other than surgery, and means just taking the patient word for it that they're suffering. My husband is a nurse, and I he said in training one of the first things you're taught is that if a patient says they're in pain then they are, it's not up to them as staff to decide whether they're allowed to be or not, or how much is deemed appropriate in their opinion!

I'm so sorry for the rant but I am so sad and annoyed for you that you're experiencing this, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. And I'm most disappointed to know that it's clearly not just my hospital as originally I naively thought it was, it seems to be a general ethos either stemmed from lack of understanding around this illness or lack of compassion in so many hospital staff.

Having said all of this, when I ended up in hospital the 3rd time before I even knew what endo was, I had a not dissimilar experience to yours and I logged a massive complaint about the way I had been dealt with by all staff, i had a long conversation with a nurse and then with the consultant who wanted to send me on my way, and it was only from having that conversation and fighting tooth and nail to be listened to that within the next few days in hospital people started to float the idea of endo and I started to do my research. I also refused to leave unless they agreed to giving me all the medication I was having in hospital, which included ora-morph, available to me at home as I wouldn't be able to manage the pain without it and would just end up back in hospital again.

If you feel able, find all the strength you have and fight to be heard, they need to change their attitudes and way of working, you're the patient, you're the victim, they need to be giving you good reason to be treating you this way and just like the others said, no matter their opinion because that should never cloud their professional judgement, for you to be on all those analgesics and still be in pain their must be something wrong and it's their job to help you manage that pain and find the source of the problem, no matter what it takes.

You have all my love and strength, good luck, keep us posted xxxxx

Thankyou so much for your message!!! Im glad there are others who understand how much this effects us!!

The general conversation today was 'your having a hysterectomy in a few weeks, nothing will happen before that so prepare for a crappy few weeks' so frustrating!!! Not only that but do they not understand that life pretty much stops on some of these meds, i can't drive, walk to the shop, look after the kids. so then you deal with feeling guilty, depressed and trying to push yourself to just get on with it all. Emotionally draining 😔 so glad i found this forum, helps to know im not the only 1 who feels like this.

All just kinda jumbled out sorry!!!
