Decapeptyl SR injection - stopped after 27months waiting for cycle to start

Hi,

This is my first post and I am hoping someone has experience and can share their experience with me.

Has anyone been on injection long term and how long did it take for cycle to return when they stopped?

Long story short - I was prescribed monthly injection and add back HRT to give me a break while waiting on lap. Prior to this I have had years of issues and many have on this site.

27 months later, still waiting for lap my employer took out private health care so I followed up to see if I could get a lap quicker, having been on waiting list since December 2015. The consultant was horrified I was still on injection, saying it’s only licensed for 6months. Her instruction was to stop immediately, both injection and HRT, which I did. Her recommendation was lap and merina coil.

I have been waiting for my cycle to return before organising my lap because she told me they may not see any endo because I had been on the treatment so long. This has been my decision to wait, purely because I have waited so long, if it’s there, I want it to be diagnosed.

The doctors told me they didn’t know how long it would take for cycle to return, but gave an average of 6-12 weeks. Tomorrow is week 14 and I have been having fairly extreme menopausal symptoms and I don’t feel like my cycle is starting. I don’t know how long I can/should wait, or the impact of continuing menopausal symptoms. I’m 33.

Any comments welcome, the support is very much appreciated. I’m so glad I found this forum, there’s been a lot of great information I’ve read.

Thanks

D

Hello D,

I was on Prostap (another brand of GnRH Analogue/Agonist like Decapeptyl) for several years. I was given the same "6-12 week" timeframe in terms of my cycle returning, but it actually took 18 months - so about 76 weeks! During that time I continued to suffer menopausal symptoms and was quite worried that, being in my late 30s, my cycle might never return - thankfully it did, it just took a little while.

The problem is that there is little published research on the experience of women left on GnRH Analogues/Agonists for longer than the licensed 6 months so it can be difficult to gauge the amount of time it might take for the drug to work its way out of your system. Especially as every woman's body is different and so is their reaction to such treatments.

I was left on GnRH Analogue/Agonist treatment for over 50 months, so hopefully your cycle will re-establish itself a bit quicker than mine did, but don't panic if it does take a little while. Definitely keep your GP and prescribing Specialist up to date on how you are faring though so they can monitor your progress.

I really hope that things sort themselves soon and your surgery goes well.
