hey all! I’m currently awaiting a diagnosis. I had my external and internal ultrasound today. Waiting for my results in a weeks time. What happens now? If all comes back normal is the next step a referral for a laparoscopy? I’m not really sure as haven’t been told anything etc. Thanks all x
Transvaginal ultrasound : hey all! I’m... - Endometriosis UK
Transvaginal ultrasound
I would imagine that’s the case if it’s endo they’re looking for. The gold standard for investigation and diagnosis is laparoscopy. Ultrasounds, MRIs and the like are good to find Endometriomas and adhesions but can miss the superficial lesions. I assume you’d be looking at referral to a specialist next, who can decide the next course of action for you personally. Best of luck!
Really, the next course of action should be an MRI, although they can miss minor bits of endo they are a lot less drastic than a lap (although you'd need a lap to remove any if you have it). Laps on the other hand can miss endo if it is in awkward to get at places and gynaes miss it if there are adhesions, it doesn't seem to occur to them that the endo could be causing the adhesion and they don't like to beak the adhesion.
Don't let them fob you off with "the ultra-sound didn't find anything therefore you can't have anything wrong with you". I had 7 ultrasounds over the years, they didn't show the endo and it was at stage 4 by the time I had the last one.
I have to agree, i had several ultersounds which managed to find fibroids and an ovarian cyst. All of which where explained as non serious issues. Within a month i was rushed into hospital with sepsis as a complication from stage 4 endometriosis. I would of pushed much more about the pain i was in and not been fobbed off had I realised how serious the condition could become.
