Conflicting ultrasound results... what now?

Hi everyone... I’m feeling really confused and frustrated and wondered if anyone has been in the same boat.

I’ve suffered with lower right pelvic pain since 2012/13, and more recently it’s also felt like it’s in my right hip and occasionally hurts on the left too. I’ve had painful sex, occasional increasing pain when my bladder/bowel are full. I also get tired a lot and just feel completely wiped out on some days. I’ve repeatedly gone for ultrasounds since the pain started, and until August this year they were all normal/clear and that was the end of it, no further action as far as my GP was concerned.

My first trans vaginal/abdominal ultrasound from August this year showed that my right ovary was immobile and tender - it also really hurt (same lower right pelvic pain) for a while after the scan from all the prodding she did to my ovary. The result was suspected endo and I then got referred to a consultant gynae.

She advised me to back to back my pill x3 packs to help. She was reluctant to go near a lap because I’m so young (was 24, just turned 25 this week) but told me to come back if it didn’t improve within a couple of months. She also told me to do lots of research (it has been so helpful reading all your stories on here, thank you!). I then decided given it can be so easily missed unless you go to a specialist in endo, to change consultant - so I did.

She sent me for another ultrasound yesterday at a private clinic on Harley St. This scan showed NOTHING. Completely clear, everything normal. The gynae doing the scan also didn’t fill me with hope as he asked if exercise twinges from pulling a muscle may be causing the pain. I highly doubt that given that it’s been 5 or so years and is constant!!

He has said he thinks it’s IBS and that I need a colonoscopy as this is ‘not a gynae issue’. But I also saw a doctor a few months ago for IBS related issues, and the low FODMAP diet didn’t improve my pelvic pain. So I highly doubt it’s that.

Can anyone help... or has anyone been in the same boat? I feel like I’m going mad and that it’s all in my head! And thank you for taking the time to read xx

Hi there, despite having already had Endo diagnosed eight years earlier and had it treated twice I found myself in a similar situation as yourself. I generally seem to get around three years between my Endo growing back to the extent of it becoming unbearable, and this year had a CT scan which showed only a kidney stone. As the pain I had wasn’t on that side I persisted and eventually convinced a Gynaecologist to do another Lap. Not disappointed as there was lots to deal with in there and even as soon as I awoke I felt better. GPS and Gynae suggested a muscle injury, IBS etc but I just kept pushing due to knowing exactly what the feeling was. I’m still currently having to push again as I think some Endo has been left around my kidney area (oposite side from kidney stone). My advice is to try to understand your symptoms well yourself, research and unless it sounds right don’t accept it. Having said that we must give respect to those who actually know this stuff rather than being armchair experts like I feel I must come across as just now, but so far it’s stood me right.

Good luck.

Hi, did you ever get answers to your problem? I’ve had lower right pain for about 3 months now and it’s driving me crazy, I don’t know if I could cope with 5 years! Every test I’ve had has come back normal and my ultrasound didnt show up anything either. I’ve been referred to gynae but who knows how long the referral will take. Would love to know if you’re any further forward!
