Endometriosis treatment

Hi everyone

I was diagnosed with severe Endometriosis in 2008. I’ve had three laporospys and had a Mirena coil fitted two years ago.

Recently I have started to get the symptoms back again and wondered what the best treatment is for this. I really don’t want anymore surgery as I have two young children but wondering what to do so I can manage work and home life x

Hi, if mirena/pill and pain meds aren't effective, what you can do is upgrade the pain meds or change pill as a starting point (presumably they had you on mirena as pill not effective so you're onto the next stage). If this fails, short term induced menopause with hormonal injections are a popular option that consultants recommend usually before or after surgery, though I think you can try them as a standalone for 3-6 months or so then about a years break. I think some might have a longer course; I had prostap, a lot of other people have zoladex or lupron shots, though am not versed in them. In terms of corrective surgery, they will only do 4-6 generally, although I know some women who had up to 10 ops, beyond this you can have another baby/breastfeed if you haven't completed your family or hysterectomy. That's pretty much the progression of treatments available. Try and get as much help and support from your family and friends/employer to help you manage, I also found acupuncture and the endometriosis diet helped lessen symptoms. (see endo resolved website for more info on treatments, diet etc etc) x

If I had a hysterectomy would that be the end of it? I’m so fed up with it!!! We have finished having children

I know, I'm with you on being fed up. I can't say that for sure - there is a lady who has just posted saying that she had a hysterectomy a substantial amount of time ago and there could be more endo there. Also the first op I had there was a lady opposite me who had hyst done but had recurrence of quite severe bowel endo due to the fact they had left her ovaries behind. For me if I reach that stage I will be asking for full hyst including ovaries and accompanying excision/hormonal treatment either side of the op to minimise the possibility of it coming back. Trying to make it to 40+ to minimise any negative impacts to health that could occur by having no mentrual cycle younger than the norm.... That's my tactic anyway, search for posts on it and ask for info from ladies who have had it how successful it has been x
