Is the Mirena Coil giving my daughter mood swings, depression.

My lovely bouncy happy daughter was given the pill as soon as she was 16 by a different doctor. I had no idea but noticed a complete change in her, she suddenly had outbursts, nagging me, nothing was right, arguing, fighting with her brother. I only found out as I found the box of pills. She has been moody ever since but she had the Mirena Coil fitted a few months ago and had even more mood swings. She has had a small op a week ago and is on Augmentin amoxicillin but has got worse with her outbursts, screaming at me, crying, shouting, calling of names. I have a lodger and need the money, she is now doing this in front of her boyfriend. My son is now depressed with this going on. Since the op she doesn't smile. Is there a link somewhere, side effect causing this, interaction or is my daughter just being a normal 20 year old. I can't talk to her doctor because of data protection so what do I do? I am at my wits end, its tearing my family apart, I am a single parent and look after my 94 year old Mum who has dementia. I need my home to be energising, I feel drained. What do I do?

I'm sorry you are having a hard time with your daughter. May I please ask whether she has been diagnosed with Endometriosis?

The Mirena is a progestogen which is a synthetic progesterone hormone and it can cause a wide range of side effects, one of which includes moodiness. You can find more information about hormone treatments here:

However, it is very hard to say what the cause of her mood swings are. It could be hormonal or it could be another underlying emotional issue which you are unaware of, and she may need to get help from the GP.

Either way, getting her to acknowledge her behaviour and the effect it is having on your family may be difficult. I assume you have tried to speak to her about this already?

Thank you for the information. I think this is what is causing her moods, they just happen out of nowhere, we walk on eggshells. When I come to think of it I had mood swings when I was her age and younger, just came out of nowhere and didn't know why but I wasn't on any contraception. She's fine today, at the moment!

Thank you, I will try it, its difficult as she explodes and walks off. Just complains about everything. Went to a BBQ and she just sat there, didn't say much. It just makes me mad that a doctor can come along and change my bouncy happy friendly daughter without my knowledge. She was actually 15 and changed family doctors without me knowing. Doctors killed my Dad with their drugs and bad advice, now fighting doctors regarding my Mum with dementia and hypothyroid. I will now never trust a doctor without doing my own research and getting at least a second opinion. Actually now I think about it I had gone for years to my doctor with palpitations and they suddenly put me on double the dose I should have been started on and I had a heart attack. Yep, sure don't trust doctors anymore, I would rather go to a vet! I shall have a chat with her, thanks for your advice and sorry for my ramblings. Yes she did have a general anaesthetic so I shall take that into account. My son is fine, 19 and loving caring and just like my daughter was.
