Amitriptyline for pain.

Hi, I'm 20 years old and have suspected Endometriosis, I get serve pain regularly and was recently subscribed Amitriptyline, an antidepressant, for the pain. Has anyone else had this? Or found that it has worked? I've been complaining at them for the past year about this and only recently after changing my GP that different things are being subscribed to me, but this is one seems particularly bizarre to me. Any help appreciated.

Hey. I was prescribed this to help with the pain before my endo was removed and I'm still on it. I take one at night time. I started with half as it made me really sleepy when I first started taking it so don't take it when your driving or about to go out 😀 I'm not having much pain anymore so I'm not if that's because endo has been removed or the tablets are working but the doctor told me to carry on with them as my nerves will be damaged from my endo and this will help.

I also take them at night as they make me sleep, but I still find my self waking up through the night and still in pain through the day - which is the pain I want to be gone as I have it worse then. I don't want to up my does because of them being antidepressants and not wanting them to be on my record.

Has the doctor discussed any more pain relief with you or do you need to give these time to work?

I wouldn't worry about them being on record. They will be there for your pain 😀 xx

I take a few pain killers starting from codeine when the pain is serve to just paracetamol when pain is moderate. So I often take these alongside Amitriptyline. You can imagine how knocked out I am taking all this medication!

I was prescribed these last week and started taking them on Friday but they don't seem to be making a difference at the moment. Hoping when they get into my system that they might take the edge off the pain xx

Similar to my case, I have been on them just over 2 weeks now. Going to speak to my doctor on Friday about it

Have they helped you any? I'm also on pentacozine, the doctor had said he hoped that I wouldn't need to take the painkillers too but so far I'm still having to take both. Xx

I don't feel like they have worked no, I have been taking codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen (not all at once) for the past year but only recently alongside Amitriptyline and still feel no difference. At the same time I was told to keep taking my contraceptive pill without a break, and have found my self to be really bloated. xx

I feel I am in a similar situation to you, same pain meds but struggle to take during the day due to drowsiness and taking back to back pills for 6 months, I went back to gp as no difference yet if not worse symptoms at times e.g. Bloating, heavy bleeds, pain, fatigue and they've said keep going for the 6 months.. how often do I go back? have you been referred to gynae? x

Yes that is similar, mine has been on going for a year now. I went to A&E this time last year and they passed it off as IBS, constipation, poor diet etc. I've only recently come across the possibility of it being Endometriosis, but in the past year I went nearly every 2/3 weeks to see my GP as I just felt they weren't listening or helping me. Only the beginning of this year I decided to change my GP, she knew straight away from my mum having Endometriosis that it is likely I had it. After all my complaints this past few week from feeling worse and even spotting new symptoms I am hopefully, being referred to a gyno on Friday! fingers crossed.

I'm on 30mg and to be honest it doesn't touch my pain but it helps with my anxiety.

These tablets only treat depression at a much higher dose e.g 150mg, for pain they are prescribed at a low dose. I started on 10mg, made me worse, now I'm up to 30mg and suits me well. I sleep well, feel a bit dopey in a morning I take them at 8pm so maybe should taken them a bit earlier. I'm not sure they help with pain directly, but getting a good night sleep has really helped me do more and cope better. Your doctor seems to be trying to help, don't worry about the anti-depressant label if it helps that's good, if not your doc may be able to try something else. Good luck.

Thanks for your response, yes my new GP seems to be helping a lot and is going to refer me to a gyno.

I also take mine at 8pm but only on 10mg at the moment, I may query a higher does in this case, your reply helped thank you

It had very bad side effects despite helping with some associated pains (esp digestive). Got me into strong pannick attacks and depressive mood. Didn't get used to it and made me sleepy.

Hello all! I was put on 10mg two days ago and slept like the dead for the first time in a week after being in tramadol due to a excruciating alpinism episode. I have woken feeling drunk - does that wear off after carrying on with it? My cocodomol and naproxen arent touching the pain like the tramadol did I am feeling very sorry for myself.
