Hi Beyours

There can be many reasons for a missed or very light period, and it may not be anything to worry about, but I would recommend seeing your doctor as soon as you can - if there is a problem, the sooner it's checked out, the better. It may be nothing to worry about, but the anxiety you're suffering in itself will be bad for you, so it's important that you seek medical advice quickly.

Have you had any other unusual health symptoms, suffered any illness, or taken any medication lately? Is there anything you've been stressed about, as stress can affect your periods? Have you changed your eating habits or lost weight?

I would recommend making a list of any unusual symptoms, even if these don't seem relevant to your periods, and running through them with your doctor.

Endometriosis can cause erratic periods, so you should mention this concern to your doctor. Other endo symptoms to look out for are pelvic and abdominal pain (possibly radiating to hips, back, legs and chest) bloating, difficulty sleeping, exhaustion, mood-swings, indigestion, bowel problems nausea.

I would also recommend getting your thyroid checked out, as this is a common cause of changes to your menstrual cycle.

Your doctor should carry out blood tests as a minimum; an ultrasound scan might also be appropriate.

Above all, I would urge you to be persistent when you see your doctor - don't be fobbed off with explanations that it's 'just one of those things', or accept treatment that doesn't address all your symptoms. If you do have endo, early intervention will make a difference - if you leave it too late (as I did, because I stupidly accepted misdiagnosis of IBS) it will only get worse, and you could end up with scarring and adhesions.

There will be a reason for your missed periods - hopefully something easily treatable - but it's important that you find out what it is.

Wishing you the best

H.
