Hello Soph!
I've had 3 laparoscopies and didn't have a catheter on the first 2.
I did on the last one but only because I had surgery on my bladder aswell. As far as I'm aware, the only reason to have a catheter is if you've had surgery on the bladder.
If you do have one, it's fitted during the surgery, and it's removed either the day of discharge or a week later. It doesn't hurt, I had it re-fitted and removed twice and it was fine well, as fine as you can be with your legs wide open to strangers!
Hope it goes well for you xx
I had a catheter fitted overnight after my diagnostic lap. It enabled me to have a rest without the need to get up at night. I found the whole thing was perfectly fine, in fact I quite like it no need to go to the toilet multiple times after drinking tea. So don't worry about it.
I think it really depends on your surgery and your team. My first lap I woke up with on in. After my second lap I didn't have one in and they got me up and out of bed pretty quickly but my bladder hadn't woken up and I ended up having a catheter inserted.
One thing I will say is keep moving your feet, keep rotating at your ankles, especially if you're not mobile. X
