I had the gnrh 3 monthly injection 11 weeks ago to treat my endo which hasn't made much difference and now yesterday I have started bleeding and I am in horrendous pain. Was just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this so long after having the injection? x
Gnrh injection: I had the gnrh 3 monthly... - Endometriosis UK
Gnrh injection
Please contact your Doctor - you shoud not be on 3 monthly injections GNRH they are not for endo but for prostate cancer in men. Women should only be on the 1 monthly injections. Every 28 days.
Which drug are you using?
You also need to report ANY abnormal bleeding - with any of the GnRH drugs and at 11 weeks this is abnormal bleeding.
Thank you for your reply, I contacted the emergency room last night as I was in excruciating pain and all the nurse said to me was there's nothing they can do for me in the emergency room and that I should not be bleeding now. It was my gynaecologist who prescribed me the 3 monthly injections and wants me to have 2 of them possibly a further 2 after that. I am getting told different things every time I see someone and I am finding it very frustrating i am not seeing my consultant until December now?
What is the drug's name? and we can check out the specifics for you online and get you the patient info leaflet to check too.
It could be that you were given the 1 month dose only and your period has returned - or it could be something else.
Ask the hospital or your GP to double check exactly what you were given.
The name and the dosage as that in itself might explain what has happened.
Decapeptyl, Zoladex and Prostap also known as Triptorelin, Goserelin and Lupron or Leuprolide respectively are all available as monthly doses for endo or 3 monthly doses for cancer treatments and premature puberty etc.
If you were given the 3 month one - then ask your GP to switch you to the monthly version which is better for monitoring progress. It is quicker to quit should you have an adverse reaction.
But abnormal bleeding if you had been given the correct dose for the 3monthly versions of these drugs is a cause for concern and it needs investigating BEFORE you need to have the next one next week. An urgent appointment needs to be booked with your GP to discuss this with them.
Furthermore - these GnRH drugs are only licenced for a maximum of 6 months exposure in a life time for women with endo due to the damage the drugs cause to bone density loss. going over the max dosage is not wise and should never be necessary as you should be having the right surgery to remove all existing endo where possible prior to commencing the drugs.
Call the hosp or GP today and find out which drug it is that you have been given and the dose.
Then come back to the forum and use google too, using the search box on the green bar at the top of the page type in the name of the drug and patient information leaflet and you should get the links to the latest info for that particular version of GnRH drug.
Also get on to the GP surgery and book to see the doc and discuss reviewing the medication in light of what has happened and whether they want you to carry on.
Do not accept a "yes do carry on" from them until they have checked you out - till you have had some tests done on your current state of health, blood pressure etc. Basic tests to find out how well you are doing. They could even do a blood test to check the hormone levels to see if they are zero or if the drug is not being effective and you are still ovulating and producing enough hormones in which case no point being on the GnRH drug at all.
Sorry cannot be more specific - until you ascertain exactly which drug it is that you have been given.
A&E can provide you with pain relief and so can your GP. If you find yourself in severe pain acute pain then do GO to A&E for relief. On call doctors DO NOT carry strong pain meds with them if they are called out in the middle of the night.
You either need to get those at hospital or if you can persuade your GP to give you a prescription - have them at home stored safely in advance of trouble - so when you do need to call out a doctor in the middle of the night they can administer the drugs to you by injection if you cannot do that yourself, or you can take the drug to A&E and ask the nurses to administer it to you.
Paramedics in ambulances are even severely restricted in the dose of pain relief they can administer to you before you get to hospital.
There are tablet forms of many pain killing drugs available nowadays.
Don't waste time calling NHS direct - if you are in severe pain get yourself to A&E or call the gynae ward where you have had surgery in the past and get their advice. The nurses there are much more familiar with this level of pain and the help that is needed than any NHS direct phone operator.
Get the pain under control asap and keep the pain relief topped up so it doesn't run out. It's much easier to manage pain that way than to let it run out before topping up again. Once the pain gets a tight grip it is harder to get it calmed down. Best of Luck and keep us posted on how you get on.
I think it was called prostap i have looked on my leaflet and alls it says is GnRH analogue injection, it is defo the 3 monthly injection although I am not due for the next one until the 11th November which will make it 14 weeks since my last one. I am going to see my GP tomorrow to see what they say about the bleeding. The reason they have said to have the injections for 12 months is because they can't operate due to me having severe adhesions so they said I have no options left except a hysterectomy after the 12 months of injections although I first got told I could only have them for 6 months and after that they would look at surgery so just feel as though I am getting pushed from pillar to post x
