chocolate cysts : Ive been diagnosed with... - Endometriosis UK
chocolate cysts
Chocolate cysts are endometriomas and hundreds of us on the forum have had them and some are living with them. Cysts can leak or explode and refill up again. Having one drained or surgically cut out doesn't prevent new one occuring oran oldone refilling upagain.
The only way to prevent ovarian cysts is to have the ovaries removed which is a bit too drastic when we all get cysts as part of the menstrual cycle and most cysts will go away all by themselves with no surgical intervention.
Cysts are usually monitored as most will go by themselves.
If they get angry or too big or twisted causing a great deal of pain all the time then draining them or surgically removing them are your only options for that particular cyst.
It doesn't stop the new ones forming and once you have had one cyst you are more likely to have others, than never have another one again.
Revisit your GP if your symptoms have returned and ask for a followup scan to check if there is a new cyst or the pains are part of the healing process or possibly scar tissue building up.
Even if it is a new cyst - if you can cope with painkillers, you will probably just be monitored and then after a while if it hasn't disappeared or burst then you may get it treated with surgery again at some point in the future. As we all get them, they are exceedingly common and it's only a tiny percentage of cysts need intervention to drain or cut them out.
Of the cysts I know about I've had two explode (one on each ovary), 1 leaking one removed in surgery along with the ovary that was stuck in the middle of it, one 8cm cyst removed in surgery from the other ovary and currently have a quiet one not causing too much trouble-easily handled with pain killers so far.
Watching them and waiting is the best course of action, and if the odd one starts to make a really big nuisance of itself then ask your GP to refer you to a gynaecologist again.
Hi
I had five cysts diagnosed in January, complex loculated chocolate cysts, they managed to drain two. On my last scan it showed that they had all become one cyst, full of old blood etc hence then name chocolate cysts, I looked at the fluid and it resembled bisto! Hope I haven't put you off that.... Anyhow, they actually told me the fluid tested negative for endo? I was not aware hey could test fluid so that was interesting, didn't stop them putting me on medication to stop it enlarging further.
Pain killers can work but some of those pesky little critters just sit against the wrong thing or cause massive pain. If that happens and they can get to the cyst they will operate. Be aware that surgery created adhesion scar tissue which can be just as bad as the cyst! Most people deal with it fine tho.
Gosh, what started out as meant to. Make you feel better post ended up rather not doing the job! It is best to know all the information available before deciding on a course of action and only you know how much they hurt etc. good luck and big hugs. It's not fun
