Op with a cold??

Hi all, I'm due to have surgery on Thursday, and think I have a cold starting! Children went back to school last week and both have colds and I think have passed it on to me. Will it stop me having surgery? No cough just bit of sore throat and runny nose, thanks in advance for advice!

Hi Mindfull

If I can remember, When i used to have to go for any surgery The Consultant or the Doctor used to say, that if you had the startings of a cold they would not do any surgery on you, and I think now a days they also check you for the bug MRSA by swabbing the back of your throat and the side of your groin. So please ring the hospital that you are having your surgery with and tell them about your cold with a soar throat, and see what they say before Thursday. Sending You Good Luck. :-0

Hi hun,

Sorry you're not feeling good :( to be honest your best bet is ringing the hospital & telling them that you are getting a cold & see what they say. Chances are they might want to postpone the op. This is for several reasons-

- Your immune system will be weaker so you are more at risk of infection

- Breathing problems/difficulty during the op

- Recovery may take longer

- Risk of spreading the virus to other patients

- I don't know about where you live but in my area they usually ask people not to visit the hospital if they have symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, coughs & sneezing, & for the 48 hours following your last episode, & if possible to re-book appointments unless they are urgent.

It might be annoying if they postpone but at least if they do then it will be in your best interests. I have alot of long-term health problems, & when I was due to have my lap in April they had to take extra precautions & I still had some complications during the op, as well as several after which are still affecting me. Either way, good luck & I hope all goes well for you :) xxxxx

Call the hospital to check. They are the only ones who'll know their policy. I'm sure you'll be fine. At my pre-op I was given leaflets including to contact the ward if I had any queries like this. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks I'll ring ward today. Just have a headache today. My op is joint surgery with gynae and colo rectal surgeon so will be hard to rearrange I think.
