Hi. I had my hysterectomy last Monday but I have been awake most of the night with what feels like stomach spasms. Has anyone else had these after a hysterectomy??

are they like hiccups but in the actual stomach just under the left of the ribs, or by stomach do you mean lower tummy gynae area where the surgery took place?

after my laparotomy I had bladder spasms causing me huge problems with having a pee- but these were not spasms i could feel happening, the electrical impulses in the urinary and digestive tracts that pulsate and send waste on their way are not something you would ordinarily feel happening but are happening all the time.

If your actual stomach is having spasms and they don't stop or ease off after a week or two from surgery then do see your GP. Taking meds like buscopan which is a muscle relaxant may do the trick and would be worth trying, there are a few different sorts of these meds - so if one doesn't help then pop back to your GP to try something else. Buscopan didn't help my bladder

issues but from the label it does indicate that it is used moe often for the digestive tract, so it might be more effective for you.

Spasms are cause by the electrical impulses misfiring - it is common to get this after gynae surgery and it usually does settle in days perhaps weeks. it is very rare for it to continue too long as the electrical impulses do tend to settle back in to firing in the right sequence for peristalsis to return to normal.

even in my case where the bladder was having spasms - it did stop and recover after 17 months -long after i gave up all hope of ever not needing meds just to have a pee. i woke up one morning and felt oddly different and thought hmmm, shal i see how the day goes without taking pills to help me pee. And i found i was able to pee and control peeing too. and not daring to hope that all was well I kept quiet for two weeks to see if it was a blip or for real, and then I had a celebration and announced to the family that my loo trips at LONG last were back to normal. Oh Happy Day.

If you are on pain meds or any other meds after the op -check out the patient advice leaflets to see if there are any indications that medication might cause these feelings.

Also watch out for signs of a DVT, so soon after surgery and f you suspect that you may have a blood clot problem - race to A&E for assessment.

You should call the gynae ward (telephone no. should be on your hosp discharge letter) and see what they say, as you are still their patient. They are likely to have a lot more experience of post gynae op complications than anyone else. They may just refer you to your GP, but run it by them in the 1st instance.

Also watch out for signs of post op infections, fever, redness and soreness of skin , weepy wound sites, smells from wounds etc and again seek urgent medical assessment if you suspect you are hit by a bug.

Good Luck - hope your on the mend really soon.

I had these following oopherectomy surgery, they cut me open and went through the nerves which then have to knit back together, hence the spasms, did they make incisions on you too? xx

Hi all thanks for all your reply. Thet are just cause from the muscle etc healing and apparently at night cause you are relaxed more you feel them more. And because I had both lap and abdominal hysterectomy and my bowels unstuck for an hour it will all be moving in there until it settles. X
