Having onje removed halve's the odds of ovarian cysts and retains one working ovary to protect your heart and main bones..(spine pelvix, ribs, skull etc).

Having both removed..means HRT for the next 20 years or more...to replace the hormones that your body needed to get from the ovaries.

Having 1 ovary left inside does mean no HRT --yay that is a good thing.

Either way..HRT and no ovaries... or leave one there....it doesn't stop the endo.

So if you have endo anywhere else in the pelvic cavity other than on the ovaries, a removal job won't cure that.

The only benefit is if you only have endo on one or both ovaries and no where else.

Or you have PCOS and are plagues with cysts

Or you have repeated endometriomas. (endo cysts)

If you want to stop having periods... but still keep at least one ovary, then just have the uterus removed and possibly one of the ovaries whipped out at the same time.

Above all none of these will help the endo pains..unless the endo patches themselves are cut out at the same time. Every surgery encourages more scar tissue and adhesions and they in themselves even without endo can cause pain and discomfort for many years. So it isn't a cure all way of recovering and some ladies actually quite a number of them, do end up in more pain after surgery than before it.

There was a DM article on post hysterectomy pains... read it and also the comments section beneath it for the words of Mr Trehan (who's one this countries top endo Docs)

dailymail.co.uk/health/arti...

I have had laparotomy for endometriomas, and endo lasered and excised in places and still have it scattered in all directions. haven't done the ablation but have lost one ovary and done zoladex too.

I am currently doing very well on my one remaining ovary with mirena coil which has stopped my periods. I am not cured I still get pains and I have a cyst too, but I am a whole heap better than I was. Functioning day to day very well. Biggest issue is actually the chronic fatigue. The Pain side is manageable with pain killers as and when required. and the loss of short term memory- which is a side effect I still have from the zoladex.

The removal of tubes is a Salpingectomy and of Ovaries is an Oophorectomy.

Looking up the medical terms on google should give you a quite a bit of info.

Also visit Hystersisters website--where there are thousands of ladies who have had their bits removed and can tell you what life is like after both ovaries are gone.

It is an irreversable decision ...so definitely weigh up pros and cons and think carefully about the implications. Best of Luck decision making.

I have already researched this a fair bit including a lot of the points you raised, found loads on hysterectomy. What I really wanted to know was is why they suggest both ovaries removed but not the rest as that would still create a menopausal state and need for hrt. Have you read anything on this? Grateful for any further reading suggestions.

Hi - I asked my consultant about ovary removal and he strongly urged against it. As impatient says, they also actually play a part in your wellbeing.

This is a very important big decision to make.

HI impatient

so are you saying in your message that ALL surgery just encouages more scar tissue? as I so far take from theinfo by mr trehan that laser and surgery by the nhs techniques do, but Mr Trehan technique does not and in majority o cases the endo doesnt come back also!

Just want the correct info out there for everyone.

Has anyone actually had surgery with Mr Trehan? I am due to go in Friday and everyone says he's great but I haven't seen anything from anyone who has had surgery with him. I'm hoping it is because they are all cured and don't come onto this site anymore!!
