Hello
I have my diagnostic lap booked for Wednesday but have not been given any advice on whether or not I should still be taking the contraceptive pill (mercilon).
Has anyone been advised to stop taking it altogether or not to take it on the day?
Hello

Call the gynae ward and discuss this with the staff nurse that did your pre-op.
I shouldn't think there will be any problem staying on the pill through the surgery, but ideally and for future reference for an endo op you should have come off all BC pills etc some weeks before, so the endo is active again (even though it hurts) and the surgeon can easily spot the endo lesions and tackle them.
Otherwise you can end up with a negative result after the op, even though you do infact have endo. For most ladies the signs of endo are all too obvious regardless, but seeing as you are on the pill, if the result is negative, it simply means they did not see active endo, not that you don't have endo, just incase you wake up to be told they didn't see any which happens quite a lot when the patient has been on the pill or coil or GnRH drugs before surgery.
Thank you so much for your reply, I've hardly slept worrying that they will cancel my op because of the I'm still on the pill!
I've got an endometrioma and possibly blocked tubes, if they don't find much endo at least those things will be diagnosed and sorted.
Thanks again. x
Hi Sarsarr, when I was booked for my lap, my gynae advised me to keep on taking the pill until the day of operation. I think it would be best if you call your gynae for his advise. Good luck x
