I'm about to start my first course of prostap injections. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Absolutely dreading it....
Prostap, what am I to expect?: I'm about to... - Endometriosis UK
Prostap, what am I to expect?
Are you having them monthly for six months?
I had 3 months of them and unfortunately had an allergic reaction and they did not stop my periods as expected so on my 4th dose got changed to Zodalex. For many I have been told Prostap does help. The injection itself does not hurt and is rotated between being given in the leg, arm, buttock or tummy. Have you been given Livial to take along side it?
Prostap and me:
Pain Free but side effects were lots of hot flushes, I had approx 1 every 15 minutes (had injections last summer so was awful, shouldn't be so bad in winter as you can escape to the cold outdoors if they get too intense and keep your living area cool they are so much better when a bit chilly in the room), very thirsty, lost 5 pounds in weight (good thing for me) lost all interest in sex and was very dry downstairs, dull 'pregnant' hair, tired and had constant headache for the first month. However, it will probably improve your endo so its worth having the injections in the long run. x
I had my first Prostap injection just before Christmas and it's the best thing I have ever done. My endo effects me to such a degree that I cannot work, but for the first time in 12 months I have felt like I have got a piece of my life back.
I still experience pain daily, so it has not completely irradicated things. But, I would have marked my pain as about 8 out of 10 on a daily basis before the injections. Now, post Prostap, I would mark my pains levels at about 4 out of 10.
So, with that improvement, Im not going to grumble really!
I can now plan things with my boyfriend... agree to social outings... etc etc, things I NEVER could have done last year. I was so, so poorly before, so even with the side effects that Prostap brings; I dont care. Im 'me' again.
The side effects I have had has mainly just been hot flushes. They arent brilliant, but hey.. its better than the horrific pain I was in! My hair has also gone a bit limp and pathetic. But hey... it's better then the pain I was in before! And I do get headaches... But hey... Ah, you know whats coming. I'll take all of the side effects over the endo pain any day.
Obviously they dont work for everyone, and every person will react differently. But I felt I needed to write something positive. It can all get a bit depressing sometimes!
Give it a go! If you dont like them, it'll only be a short term thing. Dont 'dread' having them though. Unless you have a terrible reaction to them, I dont think they're that bad.
Take care, and let us know how you get on

I am in the same thinking as Fletch. I have not long finished a course of Prostap, and its the best thing I have tried so far. (and I have tried them all!!!)
I tried Zoledex last year and had a very bad reaction, so was weary of Prostap, but have gone back to the doctor today as have my first period in 5months, and have been signed off work with the pain! he has also agreed that I can have another course of it, as it has been the only thing that has worked so far.
I would say give it a go, may not work for some, but be great for others, always worth a try..
Although I was givven Livial to help counter act the symptoms of Prostap,I had tried them last year with the zoledex last year, and they made me very depressed, so just be worned of that. but again can be different for everybody.. hope this helps a little. Take Care

They worked well for me at first though I still experienced some pain it wasn't as bad at all. I had some side effects though too hot flushes, some hair thining, a few terrible migraines, and muscle aches amongst others but ....worth it as a short term help with the pain. i had HRT as well to stop your body going into full blown menopause state. Hope it works for you, each person seems to have different experiences, Nic : )
